Need to squat, but have lower back pain!!

I have lower back pain from squatting. I used to be able to squat about 185 for reps and deadlift 225 for reps. However, now I can barely deadlift or squat 135. Although I am able to, it really hurts to squat or deadlift even such light weight. I don't know whether I should train my abs or my lower back. Squats and deadlifts are essential to my workouts and I've taken over a month off, but I still can't do them without pain coming back. Is there any permanent cure to this pain so I can go beyond where I left off?

When I had back pain from dead lifting the thing that worked wonders for me was the front squat, it didn't hurt my back at all and I could still get some good leg training in. This exercise is harder on some people's backs than others, but give it a shot with light weight and see how it feels.

like ironterminator said, the front squat does take pressure off your back and lets you focus on legs. also, try using a belt to help support your back because your trying to train your legs, not your back. your back isn't meant to hold that much weight. im usually against machines but leg presses and curls can help you maintain strength without strain on the back. that way you can give your back time to heal without sacrificing legs and once it heals you"ll still be where you left off

This may seem like a silly question, but have you had someone evaluate your form?

I had A LOT of knee pain doing squats. Increased my supplements and had my form evaluated and I have increased my squats by 100% in four months.

I experienced the same thing when I got out of the habit of stretching between sets. If I'm not limber enough, I just can't maintain proper technique. The bar wants to drift forward when I squat down during that exercise. The great Frank Zane swears by stretching between each set. If you're not doing it you should try it; just don't overdue it. Stretch the muscle being worked; short of the point of pain about 20 to 30 seconds. Probably shorter durations further into the session.
