    Hip Belt Squats

The full squat and front squat are my primary exercises for the quadriceps. I had to add an exercise to replace the hack squat given I work out at home. Much to my delight I have found the hip belt squat more effective than the hack squat. I can do high rep full squats fatiguing the quadriceps before the back is fatigued. I fabricated a pulley and platform to simulate the commercial units. If you have done or included hip belt squat to your routine, I’m curious to know your comments.
How can you visualize training a muscle if you don't know its structure?

that is awesome. How do you feel this would work if the pully was not direcly under you and out in front by about a foot? just curious.

I had it in front about a foot in my first setup. The problem was the belt pulled at an angle to the front and placed more pressure to the top right and left sides of my hips. Having the pulley directly below is similar to the commercial units. The following website shows my first setup:

Mine is about a foot (maybe a bit less) forward of where I stand, I like the forward bias as it forces correct form, crucial in my case due to a damaged knee, I tend to lean a touch to far forward with normal squats.

Good you positioned the pulley to aid your form for what I consider a great exercise. I experienced the same forward force to hips when I have the pulley in front. In my squats I don't lean too far forward. I added the support bar to aid only in balancing. I never use it to assist me in ascending from the bottom of my squat. I did need to purchase a belt because the belt I fabricated was very comfortable. The belt I bought made by SpudInc Equipment is designed for belt squats.

    I appreciate the comments.
I came across the hip belt squat machine when I read about the hip belt squat exercise. It appeared to be a better approach for doing the exercise than hanging weights below while standing on a platform. So I thought I could stimulate the functions of the machines by fabricating my own device. I added the hands support for balancing. Those machine’s prices are in the $2,000 to $3,000 range.

The hip belt squat is great exercise for squatting with minimum stress on the lower back. I can full squat with high reps without my back fatiguing before my legs.
