Jock officially in the Army wondering what's next competitively

Well, I'm finally a soldier y'all and I've made it to my advanced training. Needless to say my predictions were correct. Between no weight training, only 3 meals a day, lack of protein, intense running etc... I lost a ton of muscle. I've just recently gained access to a gym at my current base but it's certainly nothing to rave about. Hell, my only form of squats available to me are smith squats so u know I'm not thrilled about it. But it's better than nothing and I've had to work with less in the past. Also I have more calories available to me. Cutting right now would be nearly be impossible with the types of foods that are offered to us at the dining facilities so I'm going to try and do a half ass bulk.

My confusion lies with how the whole military bodybuilding contest system works. I've tried to do some research but it's been real spotty and haven't found anything concrete. Is there a particular league, are the shows tested, are they separated by military branch or do we compete all together??

So I was hoping that some of you other past and present service members that have looked into or participated in these events have any helpful information on how it all works. Otherwise, since I'm active duty it'll be a long time before I can get involved in the npc again...

Thanks everyone! Just eager to get back into diet mode since I fell just a couple weeks short of entering my last show. Hope you all had a merry Xmas and are prepping well for your upcoming shows!!

So far this show is the only one I've found that is all military but its NPC sanctioned. So I guess I would feel somewhat at home. http://allforceschampionships.us/

I'm looking for something military sanctioned though if a particular league even exists..

When I was in Europe has a better selection. Sato travel sponsered some event you will have to ask the MWR there if they have a list of stuff should be there. But once you get to your duty station the gyms will have a better selection I found When in Bragg Gold's gym could'nt touch any of the gyms on base. And if you get to Afghanistan Bagram Airbase has the Clam shell on Disney Road that is massive. I liked the Viper gym at the end of the road more cold.
The Military is very prideful of there gyms not so much in AIT. This is the hardest part after that once you find your niche even if deployed you will learn that your Duffle bag filled with items make a good lifting bag, Also dips between bunks etc you have to adapt and overcome. Good luck and thank you for joining. "The more you sweat in Peace the less you bleed in War"

Thanks man! I was beginning to get a bit worried about the gyms the military offers after seeing what's at my AIT so hearing that from you is a huge lift. Lol dips between bunks became a favorite during basic. And that's a pretty sweet quote, thanks for the pointers bro!

Congrats on making it through BCT, thats the worst part and nothing like 'big Army'

You can compete in any show you want to. I know people in the military who compete. Of course they do the natty shows because well they can't use even if they wanted to so its only fair to give themselves a fair shot. Dont be discouraged about your gym right now it does get better

You should have joined the Air Force, we have awesome Gyms at almost every location. Why do you say you can't compete in the NPC now that you are active duty? There is IFBB pros who are on active duty. I have not seen any military sanctioned BBing events other than the one's offered by the NPC.

Thanks femme! Nice to hear from you again. Every single thing u told me going into basic turned out to be 100% true so you are a well respected source to say the least! Benning was pretty intense being the last all male bct and all...

I guess going forward I'll plan to stick with the npc. It's just that I was under the impression the army and/or military itself offered some of their own shows. Perhaps I just misunderstood what someone was telling me.

1 other question though. Have you or anyone in the service that you know ever heard of getting a "no running" profile due to competitive bbing? It might be total bs, but i met a guy in basic that also wanted to compete in the military and a sgt informed him that it's possible to get one of these. Apparently they are smart enough to realize that they type of running we do is counter productive to the goals of a competitive bb so they started issuing these. Which would also lead me to believe that getting one of these profiles would only be valid with proof of participation in a military sanctioned event. Again, this could be totally made up and a load of bs lol, but if it does exist, you know damn well I want one . Ever heard of something like this??

Good job making it through basic. I went to Benning also about a year and a half ago. What MOS are you?

They will not give you a no running profile due to competitive bodybuilding. It just wont happen. Depending on what post you are on, they may have competitions but they may not be sanctioned or anything fancy. They have powerlifting competitions just about everywhere.

Most of the gyms in the army are nice. I am in Iraq on a pretty small FOB and we have a decent gym. We also have a weight lifting competition every Sunday.

You might go to a unit that doesn't run very often but you might go to one that runs all the time. When you deploy, most likely you wont have to run. If you go to a big FOB and you are a FOBBIT, you will probably have pt every morning though.

Some places you will have plenty of options to eat the way you want but some places have terrible food.

Haha yea i keep hearing that about the air force bases. Must be some truth to it.

No I didn't mean that I can't continue with NPC. I was just curious about military sanctioned events which apparently don't exist or are very tough to locate lol. I have no issue continuing in the npc though, been doing it since i was 16 =]. Puts a smile on my face to know that so many that are active status are able to compete regularly in it. Losing so much size and strength has been tough to deal with mentally but I'm looking forward to the challenge of getting it back. Hopefully muscle memory works as well as they say haha

You answered a great deal of my question with your post thanks man. I'm an ammo specialist so there's a decent chance of becoming a fobbit lol. Had no idea weight lifting comps were such a frequent even on bases. Will def look into that.

Thanks for info though bro, get home soon!!

No problem. Ammo specialist huh? We have one of those on our FOB. He works in the TOC when he isn't dealing with ammo. I don't know if each company has one but I don't think so.

Unless you get tasked out, you will be a FOBBIT. I was stuck on the FOB for the first couple months out here and I hated it. Now I go on missions everyday and time is flying. It all depends on what unit you go to.

Ammo specialist probably wouldn't be a bad job. For the most part you will probably get some freedom to do your job as long as you do the right thing.

If you have any questions let me know. If I can't answer them I can probably find someone out here who can.

Lol no running profile I'm about the size when I was running around Lagman. Running is not bad and if you get stuck on a Fob hook up with us SF we normally have the gym equip on a small fire base. I'm Ret. But I always had a power Rack and Dumbbells sent to were we were make friends with Supply and you will get everything you need.
Here is a nice tip when ordering your proteins as soon as you get your tub order again will insure you don't run out. The PX or Bagram BX won't carry what you need your online store is now your best friend. Like I said if you want to train hard in a good spot if you get deployed make friends with any of The SF (Special Forces) Guys because even in remote spots we have the gear to workout.

You can pm me I won't post Fob info out in public. But as a ammo person you will most likely get stuck on a Hub or large spoke supplying the Fobs.

haha! Did you hoard as much peanut butter as possible? lol. What about cough drops?? aka "private crack" lol... anyways...

You wont get a no running profile unless something is wrong with you, I was nervous about all the running that we do too but rest assured @ my unit in the summertime we run no less than 10miles per week and I have not lost any muscle from it personally. In the winter we dont run as much. So it works great for winter bulk/ spring/summer cut cycles.

I havent been deployed yet so I cant really speak about that. Have you got an assignment for after AIT?

haha I became a master at taking pb packets and fruit from the d-fac. The occasional muffin as well. Not my ideal sources of calories but that's all I could fit in my pockets without making a mess. Also I used to trade the candy from my MREs for extra protein from others. The new buffalo chicken one they created is def my favorite. Cough drops were quickly outlawed unless you had a profile stating you could use them lol. After getting smoked a billion times, people learned to stop buying them from the PX.

Now that I'm at least able to lift and eat normally again, I'll be able to measure how difficult it is to gain muscle with the running. I can't stand it... I haven't had to run like this since I wrestled in high school.

Haven't received my assignment but hopefully it's coming soon!

Omg. I would have DIED without cough drops. I cant believe they banned them! My favorite were the Vicks Vitamin C ones. The orange flavored ones, but I would take a menthol if its all I could get my hands on. I was there in the winter so I guess maybe they thought the extra vit c would keep us out of the TMC.

Er.. yeah I dont know about running and building muscle because I haven't ran at all during my "bulk" just got lucky I guess. First I went to WLC ( warrior's leader course) its kinda like BCT only you get coffee and 30 mins to eat But we didnt run at all there it was just enough PT to teach you how to instruct PT, well excuse me.. its "PRT" now.. so lame. Anyway, then I came back and tried to run and turns out I have herniated facsia (holes in my shin muscles) and Ive been on profile waiting for it to heal. Apparently that is a common runners injury, and I probably brought it on myself because I was running ALOT over the summer. Anyway.. hopefully it will all work out for ya. You can always sham on running.. ( run very slow) but you would still need to do something to keep your time for your PT test. Failing a PT test once you get to your unit will make you look really bad. Be a PT stud and you will get everything you want. Trust me.

I got promoted twice in a 6 month period because of my PT score, my plt sgt put in a waiver and of course it got approved. Right place, right time, right uniform, pt stud and you are golden

I cringe like the fat kids when it comes to pt lol. I'm far from a pt stud. I'll get a 100% on the pushups every time but the sit-ups and 2 mile run are a pain in my ass for pt tests. For the past 10 years or so all of my training has been for bbing so everything ive done has been in the realm of 6-12 reps except for drop sets. My body simply hasn't had enough time to adjust to all the endurance training. I never realized how little endurance I have.

I can't even remember the last time I did full range sit-ups before BCT lol, I've always done crunches. That along with still being a good 235; I absolutely suck at em so getting the minimum 50 in 2 mins is all shoot for.

I've avoided running like the plague before now as well. The only cardio I've done since I was 17 is low-intensity, long duration for pre-contest. And that should hardly be considered cardio at all... My run time has improved a ton though since starting bct so I'm happy about that. Just enough to pass though nothing to brag about.

So I guess what I'm saying is I'm a horrible representative for bbers when it comes to army pt haha. That's just fine though, lord knows my real physical goals remain on stage in the long run

Lol I feel asleep one time on the track it was so dam funny one of my Sgt's swears to this day I ran a whole lap before I feel. I kind of wish I know about Jack3d then. You will be fine you just have to adjust is all. But you do want to get at least 275 on your test at all time. Oh and one more thing I never busted the balls of my guys if they got 300 on there test I would let them have there own PT time to train instead with the rest of the group. Plus you get to set a example to the rest of the Troops. Hey if your going into Ammo you get to lift Howitzer rounds those babys weight at lest 150 a head.

hey.. you will get there.. like anything else, just takes time. I could not do 3 pushups when I joined the Army. My first PT test I failed everything except situps lol. Now I pass my PT test with a cool 270 and thats 100% on my run, 80% situps and 90% on my pushups. My score would be higher but they dont do extended scale anymore so the highest I can get for my run is 100% but I run it almost a full minute faster than my max. But whatever.

Being a support MOS and at my unit where we use our brains more than our bodies (signal corps) a 270 is pretty high.
