    The Scotch Thread

Well boys, its winter. And with winter comes the cold. And a cold beer just doesn't feel right when its -20 outside.

So a couple of years I got into scotch, half to class up the alcoholism and half for the sake of collecting and half cause there really isn't a more alpha drink than scotch.

Here is my collection so far (couple of single malts not pictured):

Started off drinking JW Black, which in my opinion is the best bang for you buck blended scotch and perfect for beginners. After sampling every blended scotch from JW I found I enjoyed really smokey and peaty tastes and ventured into single malts where I am currently very much enjoying my time.

Current favorite: Laphroaig Islay Single Malt, this stuff tastes like your drinking a fine cigar. Just wonderful.

    ITT We drink like men.

Brandy, Rye, Cognac, and Stout discussion welcome too.

What you currently drinking? Rocks or neat? Recommendations?

Nothing quite like pouring a few fingers of heaven and proceeding to sip and enjoy for the next couple of hours. BRB pouring some of my JW Blue after writing my hardest final this afternoon.

    %100 agreed.

The blue was a gift, I would not buy it again.
But needed it to complete the team.

Gold is nice, but a smokey blended scotch has got nothing on a smokey single malt.

Yea glenlivet is best for the buck. I think around 80 dollars or so. And you didn't complete the jw collection. There's also green and red label. Red is between black and gold and green between blue and gold

EDIT: sorry didn't see you have green. You don't have red label there though unless im blind

Never quite got into scotches they're a bit out of my college price range range, more of a whiskey drinker myself. Half a glass, two cubes of ice, and laugh at my friends and their flavored vodkas.

For the winter my beers have switched to stouts and porters. Six pack of these guys in my fridge.

Even as a minor who knows little to nothing but truely good alcoholic beverages, I approve your choice good sir.

I myself on the occasion that I do indulge, (with my parents obviously) I tend to favor Whiskey over any other hard alcohol, sticking in spirit with the MOS I want to branch when I commission as a 2ND LTN. (Infantry, queen of battle)

    Ahhhh found it!

This is the most unique single malt ive ever tasted, its like someone smoked a Cohiba and exhaled every puff into a bottle of pure goodness.

$55 in Canada, cheaper in the States.

Yeah, I've never had the laphroaig 15, but it's definitely better than the 10, which is really good especially for the price. If you really get into it, you ought to pick up michael jacksons book. http://www.amazon.com/Michael-Jackso...2044055&sr=8-1

Wow stupid me. BRB editing first post to reflect how ****ing alpha a good stout is.

Have you stout guys ever tried drinking it the way Guinness recommends?

"What Diageo calls the "perfect pint" of Draught Guinness is the product of a lengthy "double pour", which according to the company should take 119.53 seconds.[49] Guinness has promoted this wait with advertising campaigns such as "good things come to those who wait". Draught Guinness should be served at 6°C (42.8°F),[50] while Extra Cold Guinness should be served at 3.5°C (38.6°F).[51]
Ideally a pint of Guinness should be served in a slightly tulip shaped pint glass as opposed to the taller European tulip glass or 'Nonic' glass which contains a ridge approx 3/4 of the way up the glass. On the way to the tap, the beer is passed through a chiller and is forced through a five-hole disc restrictor plate in the end of the tap, which increases the fluid pressure and friction, forcing the creation of small bubbles which form a creamy head. The glass is then rested until the initial pour settles, and the remainder of the glass is then filled with a slow pour until the head forms a slight dome over the top of the glass.[52] Some bartenders also draw a simple design, using the flow of Guinness from the head of the tap, such as a shamrock in the head during the slow pour.
The dispensing of stout so as to achieve the desirable head has gone through a number of evolutionary stages. Originally the stout was krausened by the addition of fresh wort containing yeast. The stout developed pressure in the cask and when poured, issued as a fine smooth cream. As the cask was used it became flat, so that the stout would be blended and served as a mixture of flat stout with a creamy head from a new high conditioned cask.
Later, a device known as a "Beamish Quick-One Server" was used. The conditioned stout was poured into a serving flask with a tap at the bottom, so that a glass was poured substantially full from the tap and then a creamy head poured from the top of the server.
Later, a dispensing procedure known as "B.D." or "bottling draught" was used. In this procedure two casks of stout were used, one filled with a higher conditioned stout and one with a flat stout or "B.D." stout. A charge was drawn from the conditioned cask and the remainder of the glass filled with "B.D." stout.[53]
Canned Draught Guinness should be poured into a large glass in one smooth action, while bottled Draught Guinness should be drunk straight from the bottle.[54]"

    CLIFFS
    One can in fridge
    One at room temp.
Pour half of room temp can into pint glass, top the rest up with the cold can.
    Slowly

I swear this makes a difference if you have the patience.
