Well here in Indiana I have seen the number of men bodybuilders decreasing at NPC shows, virtually NO women's BBers, and the majority of contestants are in women's figure. This is a response to male "model" divisions at MuscleMania and some natural organizations. Seems like the NPC wants to attract the natural guys, because I have seen natural bodybuilding shows growing impressively (at least in this area).
So the NPC is trying to attract more competitors to keep their shows in the black-- probably under pressure from their local show promoters.
This seems goofy, but remember bodybuilding used to be relegated to an afterthought following powerlifting events (the chalky feet effect mentioned in the Pumping Iron book).
So times change, and money talks! The Best is Yet to Come!

Yup, they have the female division too. I'm too big for figure and if I want to do well in this division, I have to go in smaller then a lightweight female bb and soft. No more ripped. The plan is to phase out FBB.
They are continuing to lower the bar and rush people to the stage. It's all about the $$.
Looks like retirement for me because now I have no where to go...National Level Competitor (Female BB)

If the guys they paraded out on the Olympia stage are supposed to be representative of the new category, then the NPC is just promoting crossovers-- take a pair of board shorts along with your posers and backstage flip flops. It's only $35 more to go out with one hand in pocket, and who's getting jerked? Another way to help show promoters stay in the black.
