a magic matrix is just a matrix with random numbers, and all number stay random once you square them, so true.

I'm not sure if you care anymore, but it's because of basic rules of math. Think of every number inside a magic matrix as being the sum of two numbers (one number for its row and one for its column). These numbers used for rows and columns have to add up together to the magic number of the matrix (this is how a magic matrix is made). Now just think about how multiplication would keep the ratios of these numbers constant while maintaining a magic number, where as applying a square would mess up the ratios and not maintain the magic number.

^^The answer above me is so wrong I almost puked. A magic matrix is not a bunch of random numbers...
