I watched the movie "K2" last night. I've always liked that movie.

There aren't as many bodies on K2 because not nearly as many people attempt to climb K2. It was so much more technically difficult. Only the best climbers go there.

Just about any in-shape person can attempt Everest. Guides can get them up to the top.
That is why so many died in 96. Too many inexperienced climbers were on the mountain.

Another problem on Everest is the garbage. People just leave stuff up there. Base camp is a dump.

I was thinking about that. Die with middle fingers in the air or with my leg behind my neck or hand down my pants or something. Lulz.

quite a few times climbers have walked past stranded/stricken climbers because if you stop in "the dead zone" you can die pretty fast... There was a big hoo-hah about one dude who was passed by 3 groups

I talked a little about "No Shortcuts to the Top," in a thread I made in the OR section if anyone is interested.

    http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showth...hp?t=122989421

Also, there is a mountaineering store in Minneapolis that has an expo twice a year. I went in March or so and saw a presentation from a guy who tried to climb K2, he didn't make it up, but the stories and pictures were pretty sweet.

Just about any in-shape person can attempt Everest. Guides can get them up to the top.
That is why so many died in 96. Too many inexperienced climbers were on the mountain.

Another problem on Everest is the garbage. People just leave stuff up there. Base camp is a dump.

Disagree with the "any in-shape person can climb it". There are many experienced dead climbers on that mountain. Many things can happen to a climber no matter how much experience you have. In 1996 people were caught in the worst storm in ages up there.

I can see why people would want to climb the mountain, its truly an epic accomplishment, you just have to have that adrenaline junkie type personality.

Highest I've been was just over 15,000 ft in Peru. At about 13,000 ft the altitude raped me, luckily we made it to camp and I got to pass out for 10 hours. The next day I woke up acclimatized, then proceeded to the 15,000 ft mark.

I can see how people die that easily, when the altitude sickness hits you, you have absolutely NO energy and can't even bring yourself to eat or drink, you just want to lay down and sleep.

Great thread, in for more pics.

I wouldn't say it is ego driven. But yeah, it is pointless, but so is a lot of stuff.

It's crazy acclimatizing. I didn't realize, until I read "Into thin Air", that people that climb Everest are their for weeks and weeks in order to acclimate to the high altitudes.

    Urine idiot.

How is it necessarily ego-driven? Maybe some just want to feel the 'massiveness' of nature and their own insignificance?
