It depends on which ACCU-GUESS local forecast I want to believe. It's misting rain here, and cold, but not nearly cold enough for even a flurry. At any rate, it can all go away until next December or so, for all I care!

Me too, David. This current routine is nearing the end of it's usefullness, and I want to squeeze every bit of progress out of it that I'm able before I change it up.

I am, jd. I've really been enjoying this run of Squats, in particular, and am looking forward to getting under the bar later today.

    happy Monday, young lady!

#1 on the list for today is my best effort in the Squat rack. I'll also test my shoulder to see if I can handle some Chins, and then close out the training with some heavy sets of Seated Smith Presses.

    Ironwill2008 V2.0

Today marks the return of regular training. I felt rested and raring to go. Today's training eas:

    barbell Squat
    bar x15 W/U
    135x5
    185x5
    225x5
    275x5
    315x5

    315x5

    325x1

    325x1

    Chinup
    bw x5
    bw x5
    bw x5

    Smith Machine Seated Press
    95x5 W/U
    125x3 W/U
    155x5
    155x5
    155x5

I worked my way through this session in an hour and fifteen minutes. I took a little bit of extra time between the last couple sets of Squats since I decided that if I got my 315x5 okay, I'd add a dime to the bar and give it a go. I got my 3-plater, and then got most of a rep at 325; it was a little too shallow to suit me, so I'll hit it again next week.

I eased back into Chinups today, and was able to get reps-across at body weight with no shoulder issue, so I'll add a quarter next week and start moving back up.

I killed Seated presses today, adding 2 reps, bringing me to a long-sought 5-across. I have no idea where they came from, but I'll sure take 'em. Even though I got my reps-across here, I'll stick with this weight next week and see if I can duplicate the effort before I bump up even an ounce more.

That's all I've got for today. I'll rest tomorrow, and then go after Lunges, Rows, and Inclines on Wednesday with a vengance.

Post-Workout meal was a grilled chicken breast, some 4-cheese tortellini with a little olive oil, a nice salad with olive oil and red wine vinegar, a few pieces of crusty Italian bread, and a glass of milk.

    No brain, no gain.

Yard work can really take it out of you, especially if there's a lot of leaning over.

Congrats on the big session. Next time I get to a sought after sets across, I will try to stick it again the next week.

Good job on the presses. Same thing happened to me. I've been struggling with them for the last month then boom I got 12 reps across when I thought there was no way in hell it was going to happen.

I think for me, the way that All Pro routine is structured knowing that you absolutely have to get reps across to ratchet the weights up provides that last little bit of mental edge.

Thanks, Gale. I had a good day, and really enjoyed getting back to work.

If you've worked really hard at hitting a rep target, and it's taken a while to get there, sometimes it's a smart move to just try the same weight again the following session rather than immediately going ahead and bumping up the weight. I think this is especially true when you've been on the program for a long time to a point where the lift in question is just inching ahead. At that point (where effort is right at your limit), hitting the same load one more time can work better than just adding more weight and having the subsequent rep counts drop like a rock.

It's all a matter of judgement based on your prior experience.

Thanks, Rich; I had a good day.

That pic is a true representation of my ROM on that set; I measured the gap between the bar and the pins out of the corner of my eye as I came back up. I need to get at least a couple inches deeper to make it good. If I had done so yesterday, the bar would have stayed at the bottom of the rack. I really added that dime just to see how it would feel; I'll probably just bypass 315 next week and use 325 for my top set and see what I can do with it.

Glad the shoulder held up. I know you'll keep an eye on it.
Thanks. I had no expectation there (I had already loaded a couple of plates on the Lat Pulldown machine to use it if my shoulder squawked), but was happy to be able to do some Chins again with no pain. I'll add some weight next week and see how it goes.

I agree; knowing ahead of time what's required in order to have it considered a good session is a very good motivator. This sport is all mental anyway, and any possible slight advantage from that angle will just about always produce an extra rep.

I think anytime you bump the wt up in squats you have a tendency to cut the depth a little short. I'm sure it's just a confidence factor for most and once you know you can get back up, you can hit the depth you want.

    This is absolutely correct.

The first body's first reaction to an increase in stress is to try to reduce it by any means possible. Without corrective action, this usually means a shortened ROM.

And it is about the confidence factor; physically, a 10-pound increase on a 315-pound lift shouldn't even be perceptible, but we know there's more weight on the bar; we loaded it.
    No brain, no gain.

Absolutely. I would be lost without some sort of plan or goal to shoot for in a given workout and cant fathom how guys train intuitively. Different personality types I guess. Knowing what is expected of me going in is half the battle IMO.

Hey Bill, awesome work! Looks like the deload was just what the doctor ordered. I decided to call next week my deload week because I have the week off and the family and I will be in Sandusky for several days. Just started at a new gym last week so I really been hitting it hard and feel like I can use the time off.

There are very few successful bodybuilders who got that way by going into the gym without any type of plan on a regular basis. Changes in the mirror come much too slowly for them to be any kind of short-term indicator of whether or not someone is doing what they need to be doing; tracking a regular routine in a log is the only way.

Thanks, Jeff; I had a productive day. Not a lot of sets, but I feel I made the most of every one of them.

I was happy to be able to get back to Chinups again, and am looking forward to moving them back up.

Thanks, Terrence. I really needed that break; besides my shoulder ding, I was just running down overall.

Are you headed to Sandusky, Ohio, on Lake Erie, by chance? My folks had a summer cottage in Huron (a few miles East of Sandusky) for years before they passed away.

Enjoy your break; I'm sure you've earned it.

I really think that's the biggest part of it, Tiff. Training isn't complicated; once someone has put in some time to figure out what works for him/herself, it becomes very simple. Once the basics of nutrition are learned and understood, that too becomes relatively easy to figure out. But having the will to stick with both, especially through times of slow/no progress, and still getting in the gym (and the kitchen) and doing what needs to be done no matter what, day-in and day-out, well, that only comes from one place--what's in our head.

And TBH, I'm not certain that's something that can be learned; the more I interact with people on this site, both in the journals and in the open forums, the more I'm coming around to thinking that you're either born with it or you're not.

Excellent work yesterday; enjoy the rest of the evening.

Great job on yesterday's workout, especially those squats which to me are mind-blowing.

Can really identify with this, Bill. Did my squats this afternoon for the first time outside the Smith and my lack of confidence sort of held me back from exceeding bw.
