Amazing volume Bill! Those leg and calf presses are incredible. Really nice chest and shoulder work as well.

Great work! Good job picking up those extra calf reps! Very nice incline flyes, I can bench the 60's a few times.

Wednesday's training, bumped from the previous page:

Had a very good session today, despite the rainy, dark and dreary weather for the last two days. I made some progress, and built up some momentum to carry me into next week's light work. Today's training was:

    Chest/ Shoulders/ Calves

    Smith Machine Incline Press
    95x10 W/U
    135x8 W/U
    205x10
    205x9
    205x8

    Smith Machine Flat Press
    215x7
    215x7
    215x7

    Incline Flye
    60x8
    60x7
    60x7

    1flyes by ironwill2008, on Flickr

    60inclflye-2 by ironwill2008, on Flickr

    Smith Machine Seated Press
    140x10
    140x10
    140x9

    140SMPR-1 by ironwill2008, on Flickr

    Lateral Raise
    35x12
    35x10

Seated Face Pull PWO (plate weight only)
    110x25
    130x14

    Alternate Front Dumbbell Raise
    45x11
    45x10

    Leg Press Calf Raise PWO
    400x20 W/U
    490x45
    490x42
    490x40

    490CP by ironwill2008, on Flickr

Finished off this session in 75 minutes. Picked up a pair of reps on Incline Presses, and bumped the weight up on Flats and Flyes. When each gets to 3x10, I'll bump again.

Seated Press didn't increase, but Laterals and Face Pulls both inched their way up. Front raises stayed the same.

Picked up a bunch of reps on Calf Raises. Don't know where they came from, but I just kept on going until the sled wouldn't move.

Overall, a good session. I'll take a rest day tomorrow, and then close out the week on Friday, with Rows, Pulldowns, GM's, and more calf work.

PWO meal was a small (3 0z) grilled chicken breast, some penne with tomatoes, garlic, and basil (lots of basil), and the last of the chop salad, along with a glass of milk.

Thanks Vox. I'm working right at the edge of my capacity; one extra rep or 5 extra pounds is a good marker for me here.

Another month of training, and it flew by like a 747 taking off.

Thanks, MH; yes, I am. I always try to really go into deload week with some momentum, and so far this week, I've accomplished it. My entire upper body feels fatigued this morning, a good thing for me.

Hey thanks, G. I had a real good day yesterday, and can actually feel it a little bit today, something fairly unusual for me.

them flyes look heavy lol. and strong face shadow in the first pic lol.
LOL! I concentrate on not grinding my teeth together during sets, and it causes some pretty odd-looking expressions. Gotta save my high-dollar dental work!

IIRC, the heaviest I've ever done Incline Flyes was at 65 for reps, so I still have a ways to go before I tap out. When I do, I'll simply move back to Flats where I can use a little more weight.

Because of hand/wrist issues, I'm really limited in how heavy a dumbbell I can safely hold over my head/face, and Flyes give me a chance to at least do some dumbbell work.

I hope so, Phil! I thought I saw a tiny bit of calf improvement in the mirror yesterday, so I feel like I'm on the right path with them. I'll continue to hit 'em 3 times a week with varying sets/reps/weight and see what happens. They're sure a lot stronger than they were 3 months ago; eventually they'll have to get bigger, too.

We will Rich, as long as we are consistent. If we do as much as we are able, they'll have no choice but to improve.

3 oz chicken? Thats like what? 2 bites?
LOL! Maybe 3! I get a lot of comments on portion size, but it's measured to what I need. The chicken and the milk together were 50 grams/protein, just what I usually shoot for in one meal.

Of course I'll occasionally eat bigger meals; it's just that most of the time they don't happen to be post-workout and pics aren't taken. I do an eyeball average for the day's intake, and keep it around 3200 cals--200gm/protein, 100 gm/fat, and the remainder usually carbs, or maybe more fat instead, if I feel like I need a little more at the end of the day. A couple spoonfuls of peanut butter or some smoked almonds will get the job done.

It still amazes me at times, the posts by guys who think eating fat makes you fat. And the people who you'd think should know better who say they eat "low fat." Can they also say, "Low testosterone/low HGH" too?

Yes; that's my estimate as well. Sometimes I'll simply leave the bench set "flat," and then prop up the head-end with a weight plate to provide a very slight incline, just as a change-up.

Strong ass session as usual. I have directed a few newer trainees to lurk in here. Hopefully they took the advice.
Thanks, Gale; I had a good day.

Every serious trainee is welcome here; there's a large group of very knowledgeable posters in here regularly. Between the bunch of us, we can answer any question someone might have, and do so from real experience.
Oh yeah......I have not heard a response on the Parabody LP as of yet. Offered $350.
Your market area is certainly much better than mine, but something like a Leg Press would still have a limited buyer pool. I'd think the guy would jump on your offer.

BTW, I bought mine new about 10 years ago (IIRC). It cost $900, delivered.

I look at craigslist every couple of days (as well as the local ad bulletin that lists all manner of used stuff for sale). In this market area, about all that ever shows up is bowflexes by the boatload, cheap K-Mart benches and vinyl "weights," TV infomercial exercise gizmos like the "ab lounge," and the occasional Thigh Master. Depressing.

Hey, thanks! I'm working right up to my capacity in order to improve. Calves are by far my weakest-looking bodypart, and I'm on a rampage to force them to improve.

Shoulders have also been a tough bodypart for me to improve, but prioritizing them for a stretch, once a year, has really helped improve them.

Originally Posted by Beachman View Post

Thanks, Beach. I don't know where those additional reps on LP Calf Raises came from. Usually, with that load, the burn starts at about rep 25, but yesterday, it didn't happen until around 30, so I knew right then I should have been able to get a couple more reps on the top end, and I did.

Weight is all relative; what really matters is that it moves up, at whatever pace it will. In a couple of years, you'll have moved way past the 60's.

+Your back and shoulders look awesome in that first pic!
Thanks; I appreciate the comment. For formerly skinny guys like myself, narrow shoulders are a tough bodypart to improve. They've been my 2nd most lagging bodypart overall. Once a year, I'll prioritize them, working them first on their day, and use additional sets/exercises for several months. This tactic has worked well, and I expect it will continue to do so as long as I put out the effort to do work.
    No brain, no gain.

I like the low degree of incline you have your bench set at for incline flyes. It looks like its just over 30 degrees. I really feel it in my upper chest when I get my bench set there. I've got a Powertec that won't get that low and a Parabody that will allow for the lower degree of incline. I think all FIDs should allow for that, 45 degrees just hits too much front delt for my liking.

$350 is a fair price, Gale. As bolded, I think he'd be nuts to turn it down.

I hope that works out for you; it's a good piece. I've never had a second's problem with mine, and if it were a car, it would have the equivalent of 100K miles on it.

I think all FIDs should allow for that, 45 degrees just hits too much front delt for my liking.
We're all a little different in how a certain exercise/piece of equipment/etc., works for us individually, but from what I've seen, the 30 degrees is a pretty good place for most people.

Of course, it'a always possible to make "in-between" angle adjustments with a weight plate or a sturdy calf block. As I posted above, I'll sometims just set the bench to 'flat' and then put a weight plate under the head-end, just for a slight variation.

Hey, Rhino, thanks! It definitely was a good day on all counts. Chest work went well, shoulders got plenty of work, and I blitzed my calves for the 2nd time this week. I'll hit them again on Friday, ninja-style.

Agree how absurd it is for people to think eating fat makes you fat! I eat a whole avocado nearly every day! Plus almonds, peanut butter, whole eggs, etc. Fats are good and filling.

Hey thanks, Tony. That Wednesday session is my longest workout, and I have to try to keep moving. It's not too difficult since most of the stuff is small-muscle, but I still have to avoid slacking off between sets.

With the vast amount of absolutely accurate information available to us these days, I continue to be amazed at the misinformation that gets posted on this site by the hour (or minute, or second!). People post some of the dumbest nutritional advice with not a shred of fact to back it up. Probably 50% of the replies/advice I post re nutrition are simply to try to defend common sense.

As far as dietary fats are concerned, there's a reason why they're called essential fatty acids--the human body can't survive without them.

BTW, thanks for visiting my journal!

    Good morning Bill.

Nice chest work and pics. LOL, @ your meal....no wonder why I have so much trouble losing the fat (well, at least until I get serious) I think I guestimate wrong much of the time. It's time to bring the scale back out.

Question for all of your followers here....

Anyone have any experience w/ Cybex machines ( Eagle or VR3's)? Mainly are they good quality, easy to use? Also, we are needing to decide which we may want to go with....the price difference between the Eagle and VR3's seem to range from $500-$2,000.

    Ironwill2008 V2.0

Closed out the week, and this training cycle, with a good session. Weight was bumped, reps were increased, a pump was had, and muscle was worked. Today's training was:

    Back "B"

V-Bar Row PWO (plate weight only)
    50x10 W/U
    100x10 W/U
    180x8
    180x8
    180x7

    Wide Neutral-Grip Pulldown PWO
    180x8
    180x7
    180x7

    1-Arm Cable Row PWO
    115x10
    115x9
    115x8

    Good Morning
    185x6
    185x6
    185x5

Leg Press Calf Raise SRC PWO
400x100 brutal; wanted to quit @97, but didn't want to have to post that.

Completed this session in just under an hour. I bumped up the weight on V-Bars and Pulldowns, and am right about where I want to be, load-wise. I'll work these both back up to 10-reps-across before bumping again. I got a massive lat pump on the first set of Pulldowns, a pretty fair sign that all was right.

Picked up a rep on 1-Arms, GM's stayed the same, and Calf Raises kicked my butt. Calves locked up at 97 reps, but I just forced out 3 more so I could claim my hundred. Geez, if those suckers don't grow from all this, I don't know what else to do except maybe work 'em every day!

Post-workout meal today was a plateful of Red Beans and Rice, with a boatload of hot sauce for good measure. A glass of milk completed the meal.

    No brain, no gain.

Hey, Will! Thanks; I had a good day, and got some work done.

LOL @ "guesstimate!" Once you get portion sizes figured in your head, you can usually put the scales away and go by eye. If meal size is starting to sneak away from you, then by all means bring out that scale!

My usual meal is 550-650 cals, and I'll use the last one of the day to bring everything into balance.

My only experience with Cybex stuff is in the past when I trained in commercial gyms. They're an old-line company who's been around for years, and they only build high-quality equipment.

Sorry I'm unable to help on anything more specific, except to say that it would be hard to go wrong with their stuff.

Great pulling IronWill! Good job getting your 100 calf presses! My wife knows a guy who sometimes spends a whole day on calves alone, his calves look really good too.

Do you do 3 work weeks then a deload or 4?

In all the time I've been following your journal I don't think I've ever seen you doing bb rows, any reason for this?

Hope all is well big fella!

400#x100.............what doesnt kill you makes you stronger?????? Those numbers are insane. BTW....looks like the Leg Press is a no go at $350. I may try to meet him in the middle at $400 before giving up.

Thanks! It was a solid workout.

My long-term calf plan is to gradually add days/sets/exercises until I see some change in my calves. I think they're just now beginning to respond a little. I'll systematically add work, until I'm to a point where I feel I'm doing just enough. If that eventually means an entire day for calves, so be it.

Do you do 3 work weeks then a deload or 4?
Yes. That's what works well for me. When I first started out, my mentor had me train light every 8th week, and over the years, my recovery has needed additional time. I figure when I'm 90, I'll be deloading every other day!

I have used Barbell Rows in the past, but it's probably been close to 2 years since. I've found that T-Bars (and their variant, V-Bars) feel better to me, and I immediately have a solid MMC with them. I initally dropped BB Rows from my routine because I was then Deadlifting every week, and trying to Barbell Row in the same workout, and my lower back got to a point where it was beginning to rebel.

I haven't abandoned BB Rows permanently; they're an excellent exercise. They'll be back at some point; probably right after I tire of T- and V- Rows.
