A new modem country singer, very much in the popular style of Alan Jackson and George Strait, with an emphasis on the lyrics. In this case the focal point is the Lord Jesus Christ. "Unplug The Jukebox" is neat as is "He Loved Us To Death". Other good tracks are "You Can't Draw Water From A Dry Well" and "Trailer Hitch". New Tradition's Daryl Mosley wrote "Rose Of Sharon", an interesting alternative to the western fiddle classic "Rose Of San Antone". To sum up, this is an album of good modern country music that has grown on me more every time I have played it. The only drawback is that there is nothing you could say was truly outstanding. Undoubtedly a promising debut from an artist to watch.

Oak Ridge Boys - Collection 1992



This album includes nearly every major ORB hit from their first country release up until 1987. Songs such as "Elvira," "American Made," and "Thank God For Kids" are all featured on here (in good order, I might add). My only question is, where are the hits with Steve Sanders? This collection was released in 1992, which would've given MCA at least 6 songs to choose from with him singing on it. I feel this is a great injustice, especially since none of the hits from the "American Dreams" album ("No Matter How High," "An American Family") ever made it to a greatest hits package.

Jonathan Edwards - My Love Will Keep 2011



The career of Jonathan Edwards is approaching the 50 year mark. It began during the mid-sixties and quickly progressed as a member of the group Sugar Creek. Leaving the band, during the early 1970s, he released his self-titled debut album. It contained the track “Sunshine,” which would become his signature song. He has been recording, doing session work, and touring ever since.

My Love Will Keep is his first studio album in over a dozen years. He has now joined such artists as Tom Rush, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Jesse Winchester, David Bromberg, Roger McGuinn, and Donovan, who have re-emerged with new albums on the Appleseed Label after long absences.

His latest release does not break any new musical ground but covers the old very well. Whether one of his five new original compositions or one of the seven cover songs, they fall into his comfort zone of gentle folk and pop.

While his original material can all be considered to be typical Jonathan Edwards’s material, he varies the tempos and topics. “How Long” is an up-tempo return to his bluegrass roots. “Johnny Blue Horizon” is a heartfelt tribute about nature for his deceased friend John Denver. “Crazy Texas Woman” looks back to his time in Austin, Texas, and has a nice bluesy feel to it. He leads the way with some fine harmonica playing. “Surround” is a mellow song about a lazy summer day. “Lightkeeper” was written for the film, The Lightkeepers. It is a well-constructed song with vivid imagery.

The most creative and interesting track is his cover of the classic Beatles tune, “She Loves You.” It was originally a straight forward rocker, but Edwards slows it down into wistful and sensitive ballad.

He moves back to his social awareness past with several tracks. “Everybody Works In China” is a twenty year old song about unemployment and jobs moving out of the country. He gives it a gentle work-out, as the song remains relevant today. “Sailor’s Prayer” returns him to environmental issues of what humanity and the planet Earth face in the future. “This Island Earth “ is an old a cappella song by The Nylons. Edwards adds some basic instrumental background but retains the harmonies on these lyrics of the interconnectedness of people and the environment.

My Love Will Keep is a thoughtful experience for a summer day, when a long lost friend comes to visit. It is a well-produced album and the songs fit his style well. It all adds up to a nice addition to his catalogue of music.

Roy Rogers - Home On The Range 2001





Although Roy Rogers was one of the most famous singing cowboys of the movies, he was only a modest success as a recording artist, and the budget-priced Home on the Range compilation drawn from his releases as a solo singer and with the Sons of the Pioneers for RCA Victor Records between 1936 and 1947 demonstrates why. Rogers' tenor was not particularly distinctive, and most of his material was pedestrian. Hits such as "Cool Water" and his signature song, "Happy Trails," are missing from this set, though standards like "Don't Fence Me In" and the title song as well as the mid-'40s country hits "A Little White Cross on the Hill," "My Chickashay Girl," "Blue Shadows on the Trail," and "(There'll Never Be Another) Pecos Bill" (the last two with the Sons of the Pioneers) are included. This is hardly the definitive collection of Rogers' best recordings, but it does give a sense of his sound, and it is inexpensive.

This five-disc set includes almost every single and album track Johnny Cash released between 1959 and 1962 (Bear Family has omitted Cash's concept albums from this period, collecting them instead on the 4-disc COME ALONG AND RIDE THIS TRAIN). These were transitional years for Cash, as his sound evolved from the spare, electric style he perfected at Sun Records to a more acoustic-based folk style.

These were also troubled years for the star, during which Cash became addicted to amphetamines (partially in response to his work schedule, which included not only recording but also acting and 300 live performances a year). The effects of the drugs are evident on the later tracks, where a hoarseness and quavering is detectable in Cash's vocals. THE MAN IN BLACK 1959-1962 also contains more than a dozen previously unreleased tracks and an entire disc devoted to a 1960 recording session. This beautifully packaged and extensively annotated box set is a must for Johnny Cash completists and for hard-core fans of classic country.

Randall Hank Williams (born May 26, 1949), better known as Hank Williams, Jr. and Bocephus, is an American country singer-songwriter and musician. His musical style is often considered a blend of Southern Rock, blues, and traditional country. He is the son of country music pioneer Hank Williams and the father of Hank Williams III, Holly Williams, Hilary Williams, Samuel Williams, and Katie Williams.

Williams began his career by following in his famed father’s footsteps; singing his father’s songs and imitating his father’s style. Williams’s own style slowly evolved as he struggled to find his own voice and place within the country music industry. This trend was interrupted by a near fatal fall off the side of Ajax Mountain in Montana on August 8, 1975. After an extended recovery he challenged the country music establishment with a blend of country, rock, and blues. Williams enjoyed much success in the 1980s from which he earned considerable recognition and popularity both inside and outside the country music industry. He is now considered a seasoned professional and leader in the country and outlaw country genres.

In the ongoing effort to make sure everyone who has recorded more than a
couple of albums is feted with a tribute disc, the folks at Warner Bros. and
Curb have assembled a star-studded tribute to Bocephus himself, Hank
Williams, Jr.. Drawing its participants from both the traditionalist wing of
country and the long-in-the-tooth southern rockers, the disc straddles the
line between rock and country much as junior always has. On the country
side, there is a nice mix of big names like Montgomery Gentry, Tracy
Lawrence, and Alan Jackson, who turns in one of the disc's highlights with an
aching version of the ballad "The Blues Man," and smaller stars who shine
brightly: Andy Griggs weeps his way convincingly through "Old Habits"; Trick
Pony, featuring the lone female to be found here, turns in a rollicking version
of "All My Rowdy Friends Are Comin' Over Tonight"; and Chad Brock pulls off
a coup by roping in John Anderson, George Jones, and Williams Jr. to help
him sing "A Country Boy Can Survive." The rockers are represented by the
current incarnations of bands that ruled the 1970s airwaves. These songs
are generally less successful than the ones the country artists perform. The
Marshall Tucker Band sound old and broke on "All My Rowdy Friends Have
Settled Down," .38 Special tunelessly stomps its way over and through "If It
Will It Will," and Lynyrd Skynrd sounds pretty lame attempting a metal boogie
version of "Born to Boogie" (they probably need to stop hanging out with Kid
Rock). The only rock artist who sounds half decent is Dan Baird from the
Georgia Satellites. He turns in a nasty version of "Whiskey Bent & Hell Bound"
that actually sounds better than the original. Speaking of the original,
Williams Jr. claims the last track of the disc for himself, performing a heartfelt
version of "Outlaw's Reward" featuring many of the artists who appear on his
tribute and also Stevie Wonder

Gary Nicholson - Texas Songbook 2011



This album is Texas through and through. Gary Nicholson had set out to make what he calls "a truly country record." He's certainly succeeded, though there still are other elements there, like a New Orleans flavor on a couple of tracks. But those who love country will most likely dig this album.

I have to admit, at first I had a bit of trouble with this album. Maybe it's because I have a lot of negative associations with Texas. First off, there is George W. Bush and that whole debacle. Also, Texas executes many more people than any other state. And we have Texas to blame for Alex Rodriguez's insane contract and subsequent ego. Of course, none of this has anything to do with the music (except that the music celebrates that state). And this album definitely did grow on me, especially songs like "Some Kind Of Crazy" and "A Woman In Texas, A Woman In Tennessee."

DAVE SHERIFF was born in the heart of the country on the Doverdale Estate near Droitwich in Worcestershire, England where his father worked as a gamekeeper. The family then moved to the Reading area in Berkshire where Dave made his first public appearance at Bradfield Village Hall back in 1958 playing the harmonica, beginning a lifetime fascination of playing musical instruments. He was educated at Chiltern Edge Secondary Modern School, Sonning Common where he was an active member of the school choir. After teaching himself to play the drums, he progressed to guitar, and then started playing all three instruments together to become a very popular club act, and a world famous ‘One Man Band’ having no less than nine entries in the Guinness Book of Records between 1982 and 1989. This led to TV appearances in Hilversum Holland, Rome Italy and Helsinki Finland as well as two appearances with Roy Castle on BBC TVs 'Record Breakers' in London, and personal appearances on the European Record Breakers tour in Grenoble France, Fak am see Austria and Copenhagen, Denmark.

During the 1970s, he worked as a session musician playing harmonica and keyboards on TV shows with Kelvin Henderson and Pete Sayers and whilst working at the prestigious Wembley Country Music Festivals in London, worked with top American Country Artistes Don Gibson, Dennis 'McCloud' Weaver, Ronnie Prophet, Carole Baker, Dave & Sugar and the Nashville Superpickers which included Lloyd Green, Charlie McCoy, Johnny Gimble and Pig Robbins which led to more TV appearances on the BBC series 'Sing Country' from Snape Maltings in Suffolk. He also toured with 'Cowboys Sweetheart' Patsy Montana and Country legend Slim Whitman on his 1977 tour.

In the 1980s, Dave was 'discovered' playing at a Midlands talent showcase by entrepreneur Bernie Burgess (an ex member of the legendary Jones Boys) who molded his 'one man band' musical act into that of a polished cabaret performer. It was thanks to Bernie that Dave received the 'Midlands Musical Entertainer' award at the New Cresta Club in Solihull in 1981. Another TV appearance followed in 1984 when he was cast as Country Singer 'Whispering Fred Jones' in the long running ITV soap 'Emmerdale Farm'.

He began writing and recording in 1991 and his debut CD album ‘One Man Band Extraordinaire, which contained sixteen of his own songs, was awarded ‘Best Album’ at the 1993 ‘UK Country Music Radio Awards’. Finding it almost impossible to get a recording deal, he decided to form his own recording and publishing company ‘Stomp Music’, and now has an impressive catalogue of CDs containing the many songs he has written.

Dave has recorded many of his songs in Nashville, working with the very musicians responsible for creating that very distinctive 'Nashville Sound' - Pig Robbins, Buddy Spicher, Pete Wade, Leon Rhodes and Buddy Emmons have all contributed to Dave's music and the legendary 'Jordanaires' who can be heard providing background vocals on so many hit records from artistes such as Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, Marty Robbins and Jim Reeves, can also be heard on Dave's album 'Dave Sheriff in Nashville' which also includes a duet with Grand Ole Opry star Porter Wagoner. The highlight of Dave’s career has to be singing at the world famous Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, USA where he was invited to appear in June 2000 by Porter Wagoner.

Dave returned to Nashville in September 2005 to start recording the highly acclaimed ’Overworked & Underpaid’ album. Included in this album is the song ‘I wish I had a Bassman like The Jordanaires’ which is a tribute to tremendous contribution made by the group to the music business stretching right back to 1950s - they claim to have backed over 3000 artistes during their career! Three singles from the album (including the above) have reached the Number one position in the British Country Music charts
