Please respect the serious tag. I'm going to post this in nutrition as well, but the Misc is by far the most active section so i'm hoping to get more responses.
I'm currently trying to find research or articles that show why exactly diet soda is bad for you... but most are ridden with bro-science like you would find here.
"Aspartame causes cancer."
"Artificial sweeteners are the debil."
But after reading into the ingredients of Diet Dr Pepper (my soda of choice), the only negatives of drinking diet soda are,
1) The artificial sweeteners increase appetite and sugar cravings. (But if you can control these... what's the problem?)
2) There are no nutritional benefits from drinking diet soda. (But there is nothing in it that will kill you either.)
3) People with Phenylketonuria shouldn't drink it because aspartame breaks down into many different things, one of which is phenylalanine.
So, can any miscers find me proof as to why diet soda is bad? Please don't quote an article from yahoo answers with Ms. Sally Broscience saying that aspartame causes cancer, because it does not.
Cliffs:
Diet soda tastes great.
Can anyone PROVE it's bad for you?
No Broscience.

Only people with a lower degree of self-control drink diet soda in my opinion.
Soda is like a candy beverage and should be enjoyed sparingly. People who substitute for diet are fooling themselves because it is still putting unwanted contaminates in your body.
Just drink water and enjoy the real thing every now and then.

If you want to drink soda, diet soda is definitely better than regular soda.
So if you want soda, drink diet soda.
While I wouldn't say there is any benefits to drinking it, I don't see much harm in drinking it. Just make sure it isn't the only thing that you drink and drink plenty of water throughout the day too.

Most diet sodas and soda in general contain phosphoric acid, which will change the ph of you body from an alkaline state to acidic state. When your body goes into an more acidic state is has to utilize minerals in your body like calcium, iodine and magnesium to balence your ph back to normal levels, after which those minerals are flushed from your body. Iodine helps maintain the health of your thyroid gland which regulates metabolism in your body. If your thyroid is under producing due to lack of iodine your metabolism will become sluggish and you gain weight as a result. Just like everything else, do it in moderation.

It's not that bad in moderation but the problem with food/eating in America is not being able to see the long term effects. Our bodies are meant to eat sh*t that comes from the earth: meats, fruits, vegetables, wheat, nuts, etc. But instead the food industry processes the hell out of everything because it' cheaper and there are no real side-effects in the short term, which are the only ones anyone could prove. After putting this processed/artificial stuff in our bodies multiple times a day for decades there is going to be some effect. It's the people who do this then can't understand why they're diagnosed with cancer when they're 60 that make me bertstare.

I doubt a can or two of diet pop during the day is going to hurt you.
Lots of the Aspartame-haters point to the fact that Aspartame creates Methanol in your body which then becomes Formaldehyde. Obviously these people aren't aware that the amount of Methanol produced by Aspartame is far too insignificant to even cause minor complications, never mind the fact that some fruit juice has more methanol in it than Aspartame does. (But we never hear about this).
They also tend to forget the fact that one would have to consume two dozen cans of Diet Dr. Pepper to surpass the FDA's acceptable daily intake numbers and even then there are negligible ill-effects shown on one's health.

**** time Investigoogling.
Everyone should ignore your post.
There's actually more studies debasing your statement than supporting. It's less the phosphoric acid than caffeine:
"Total phosphorus intake was not significantly higher in daily cola consumers than in nonconsumers; however, the calcium-to-phosphorus ratios were lower."
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17023723
i.e. it ain't the cause.
"Phosphoric acid without caffeine produced no excess calciuria; nor did it augment the calciuria of caffeine"
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11522558
But caffeine does:

If you want to argue this further don't be an Aragon and neg like when he was proven wrong regarding fructose metabolism. Which actually related to soda.

lol, might wanna look into studies showing the effects of diet soda on insulin. It's not just about the sugar content, when your taste bud receptors taste sweetness they start the insulin response, even before your body is completely sure there's sugar, so even diet soda is bad for you. Not to mention all of the poison flavorings and chemicals in it. Honestly you guys who drink 2 or more diet sodas a day should try cutting them out for a few weeks, guarantee you'll feel better without your body constantly fighting off the effects of them.

It has too many midichlorians in it. If your body isn't genetically predisposed to be "in touch" with them, they do more harm than good.
