For shirts, patterns are almost always a bad idea UNLESS it is a non-casual event and it is a gingham/plaid
example: http://www.farfetch.com/shopping/us-...urce=shopstyle
of course they can be found for much cheaper at Gap, H&M, etc.
Otherwise, go with standard Button Down Cotton Oxfords. These are and always have been a staple in mens wear since their advent. They always look great. Rule of thumb is darker color = less casual. So white and light blue for work or formal events and reds, blacks, darker blues for clubs or something. Also, these can be rocked untucked and ruffled up a bit for a very casual day with some shorts and sperrys.
As for shorts, again no patters. Nothing hanging off of them or draping or anything that resembles cargo shorts (this can be pulled off by some, most look douchey though). Just go with plain (NON-PLEATED, that is for ****gy time) khaki shorts that sit ABOVE the knee.
example: http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do...d=1&pid=528453
that is basically the epitomal "shorts and sperrys" look, and it will forever be fashionable. You can switch up shorts because they will always be worn on casual days, so people will be more forgiving with colors. Try blue or nantucket reds for a classic look that makes you seem like a baller from the south hamptons.
Finally, for fashion inspiration or tips, look at collections from places like Gap (they stepped their **** up in the past 5 years, be reality), Banana Republic, H&M (not so much for older people), Nordstrom, etc.
Always try to get something fitted. In most cases, the fit will actually determine how good the piece looks on you. Plus, you always want to get something that compliments a great body. But don't go too tight, no one likes a douchebag.

sup breh just stoppin' in
lollllin' at all the wannabe fashionistas up in this thread
i'm admirin those shirts, the shorts go with light shirts though. Dark on dark never works for me personally.
Anything that is premium fit/athletic fit/etc will look crazy good on the physique. Your style isn't bad at all, so stick to it.
Though just as a suggestion, i would steer clear from that last dress shirt you have up there with the jeans ^
