running a mile vs walking a mile does burn about the same amount of calories.
Difference being that if it takes you 15 minutes to walk a mile and you burn 100 calories doing it, you've burned 100 calories in 15 minutes.
If you run the same mile in 6 minutes you've burned 100 calories in 6 minutes, plus the extra calories you get from those extra 9 minutes you would have wasted walking.
Think about net calories and time instead of "what action burns what".

The strain may be more, but the duration is not, so it sorta balances out. However, there are much more long term benefits from running vs walking due to the beneficial effects for lung capacity and ability as well as heart rate and blood pressure.
Of course, the long term effects on muscles is greater for running than walking.Short term Goal: To cut back before bulking like a demon.
Mid term Goal: To find myself.
Long term Goal: To get what's mine.

Simple answer is absolutely NO. An average person walks 5 miles/day and people are telling you that doing this and running 5 miles at a 6 min/mile is all the same?! So basically my grandma walks 2 miles a day in the morning and this is the same as someone doing HIIT?

Wow! You sir, are a retard. You run 5 miles, okay. Then you walk more the rest of the day. So basically they'd walk the same as they usually do, but with the 5 mile run in top of it.
In the end, the two are pretty much the same, running does burn a minimal amount more. However, running is also quicker and not such a strain on for those with needed time management.

They will burn same calories but they will not have the same impact from cardio/weight loss point of view. For effective cardio you have to increase your heart rate and keep it elevated for some time. Your body is heated, you will sweat, you cells get more oxygen, you muscles are working more, yada yada. It is like puting your body in overdrive. The after effects of cardio remains with you for 24 hours. Leisure walking may burn same calories during that one mile walk but after that it has no effect.

Yeah. Go walk 100 yards and then go sprint your hardest for 100 yards. All the same, right fool? Repeat it a few times and tell me it's burning the same amount of calories, again fool? Go walk stairs for a mile and walk for a mile. Bet it's the same, right fool? Common sense just goes out the window sometimes, huh fool? Please write us something with any scientific proof or even self experience disputing HIIT and/or Tabata and how ineffective it is compared to walking with your grandma and her cane. Please enlighten us all. Because with your theory,
walking and these are all the same.

I would say both are close but running will take slightly more calories.
You can walk "smarter" and more efficiently, so you can save a few calories than by running.
PS. Energy spent can be totally different even if starting point and end point is the same. Because we are talking about nonconservative forces (physics 12 anyone?), how we got there is just as important.Last edited by firstez; 08-15-2010 at 11:27 PM.

Calories burned during a distance of 1 mile is the same running as walking. HiiT will keep your metabolism stoaked after that mile. . . You still burn the same amount as walking for the duration of that distance though. Personally I prefer to run, HiiT, or both in the same session.

fool, fool, fool... wow... your dumb if your comparing walking stairs and just plain walking for one mile.. they are two different things.... traveling a distance thats exactly the same will result in the same cals burned... running gets you there faster than walking.. you spend more time walking to the destination therefore burning the same amount of calories over a longer period of time..

Running burns approximately 50% more calories per mile than walking - it's not as simple as shifting your weight over the same distance = same calories burned. In fact, the net burn of of running compared to running (once BMR is taken into account) is almost 4x as much.
'Syracuse University researchers measured the actual calorie burn of 12 men and 12 women while running and walking 1,600 meters (roughly a mile) on a treadmill. Result: The men burned an average of 124 calories while running, and just 88 while walking; the women burned 105 and 74. (The men burned more than the women because they weighed more.)'

Thanks for pointing to some actual numbers. It makes sense to me. If you put treadmill on incline of say 9 and travel same distance, you will burn almost two times more calories because you are working against gravity. In running you are pushing your body against air resistance. In competition where records are broken, they even tell you if it is windy day and they are running for/against the wind. When you surprise your body by changing your speed in unexpected ways, your body burns even more calorie (interval training).

Are you commenting on what I said for fun? Or did you seriously not comprehend what I said above? No hate, just don't think you read it correctly.
EDIT: And yes, you can try to quantify the effects of an elevated heart rate after running. Thats fine, that does burn calories. But you don't really need to delve that deep to prove running is better.
(calories running) + Base metabolism rate(time walking - time running) > Calories walking
If you assume that calories running = calories walking, the above would illustrate why running consumes more energy mathematically.Last edited by C.ruel; 08-16-2010 at 06:25 AM.

I have heard from a lot of sources that walking 1 mile = running 1 mile for calories burned. However, actually running a mile and walking mile IRL always seemed to me that you spent more energy running. For a few months a few years ago, I walked about 3 miles a day. I don't think I lost any weight doing that. Whenever I would run 3 miles a day, I would always lose weight. So, I derived for myself that running>walking for burning calories. Still, in the back of my mind I always wondered if it were true that same distance = same calories burned. Thanks for posting this and helping to clear this up.

For those who are thinking in terms of work done to transport the body weight from point A to B being same, you are neglecting the effect of heat. Running heats up your body to support your muscles that are working much harder, that's why you are sweating to cool it down. Producing heat takes up calories. If you sit in sauna for one hour, you are not doing any work but you still burn 300-400 calories due to heat being produced in the body.
