We have an unfinished basement that's in the shape of a blocked lower case d with the "hole" in the center of the "d" taken up by the stairwell. The bottom of the "d" is where the gym will be. From the far left to the end of the stairwell wall is 20' and where it opens up to the upright is another 13'. We're thinking that we might go about 4' beyond the stairwell wall for the gym. I have no idea if that makes any sense at all but in the end it probably doesn't really matter. I was thinking about building an 8'x10' platform that would span the 10' wall to wall space and go 8' deep that would be dedicated to the rack, deadlifts, and general dumbbell work. The 10' width makes spacing a challenge, it seems like it forces the design into a half galley style gym where all of the pieces are on one side of the wall with the other side serving as the dedicated corridor.
So far I have the half rack, Ironmaster adjustable dumbbells, a Hoist V2 home gym that I kind of regret because of its footprint, a treadmill, and an elliptical. The treadmill is here to stay but the elliptical could be on the chopping block if more space is needed. I picked up a cheap used Keys FID bench that has a preacher curl attachment and leg curl/extension attachment. This works for now but don't particularly like it. I got 9 stall mats on black Friday for flooring.
I would love to have a leg press/hack squat machine but not sure if it's practical. My wife has requested a hyperextension/roman chair and we need a solution for pull-ups and dips. From there, a dedicated flat bench is on the wish list and the needed assortment of bars and accessories. Open to recommendations!

Getting my second rack most likely this weekend. I’m trying to picture your set up....
Are your racks side by side with the platform @90 degrees between them? Like the letter T?
Or do your racks face each other with the platform between them like an Oreo cookie with the racks being the cookie, and your platform being the creamy delicious center?
New,rack is a bolt down so I have to be pretty sure where i want things before I,drill into concrete.
Any reasons why you, chose your layout? Would you,do anything different ?

My phone apparently has been abused too much to take clear pictures anymore, so here's the most recent picture I could find (this one's not exactly crystal, or a great angle, but should give you the gist). I am currently using somewhere around 34x10 for my gym. The racks are backed up against the 34' side. The 4x8 platform is hard to see in this picture, but it's backed up the same way as the racks with the 8' side against the wall.
So:
[Rack] [Platform] [Rack]
I chose this layout (or had it chosen for me, really) for a few reasons, in no particular order:
1) There's a doorway at the end of the gym on the right that goes to a small room that I store equipment in, like the rack-mount GHD when I'm not using it. I keep enough space open there so it's not a horrible PITA to move stuff in and out.
2) With only 10' of width, if I put the back of the full cage against the 10' wall, I wouldn't have room to use the rack-mount GHD
3) The overhead ducting on the top right runs the whole length of the basement except for the last 10' towards the window. Orientating the platform or 3/4 rack differently would prevent me from doing overhead stuff. You haven't really lived until you accidentally slam an axle into the ducting at 9pm right after your kid finally went to sleep.
The rest of the gym behind the camera has my reverse hyper, lat pulldown, 45 degree hyper, and room for one more piece. Technically I can expand another 6' to 40x10 before I hit a another storage room on the other side, but I haven't had a desire to do that yet.
As for things I'd do differently, Plan A is moving to a new house. That's for family expansion reasons rather than home gym reasons, but finding a place with an outbuilding that can house the gym would be nice.

My space is 24’ x 10’. Placement is a trade off / balance of space, access to shelving, electrical panel, overhead duct issues, and general aesthetics / functionality, etc.
Still trying to,figure out pic posting but currently I’m thinking.....
[rack] [rack ] [legpress ][pulldown]
[eliptical] [platform]
[echo bike] [plate storage]
Current rack ad future rack will not have plate storage but takes up more floor space. I could save up a bit more for on rack storage and I could may emulate your floor plan.

murphyreedus, did you consider placing your second rack on top of your platform? I “could” duplicate your setup, but I’d have to lose my legpress to do so.
So, it’s looking like the second rack will be on top of my platform. This way I can have two “stations “ set up and warm up between worksets. Squats/deadlifts in one rack, and bench/press in the other.

Coincidentally, I sold my second rack over the weekend because I decided I'd rather fit a leg press for the quadz. Just got done fitting my Dynamic dip attachment and rack-mount GHD to the York rack. Gym definitely feels different.
I never considered putting a rack on my platform as it is 4x8. Neither rack would work on the platform anyway, as neither would work for stuff like log clean and press.

Your rack looks like it could accommodate a log clean and press, no?
I can’t fit a leg press, and a separate deadlift platform. Gotta put the second rack on top of the platform. Can’t see myself doing log presses, but I could always get two used tires as a “platform” if need be and roll them in as needed.

Between the two, I'd go for the Fitness Reality one. But if you're considering a rack like that, you might as well go for the Iron Factory rack, which is made by Northern Lights and sold through Fitness Depot. It's $230 and the only difference is the pullup bar (which you can upgrade through Fitness Depot for another $50). You may even have a local Fitness Depot store, which means that you wouldn't have to worry about shipping/delivery, and you'd be able to check it out in person before buying it.
If it were me, I'd save up a bit longer and get a CrossBox rack from Fitness Depot instead. The F-1K rack starts at $688 and is similar to a Rogue R-3BT ($970) from their Infinity R-Series. It's the one I have and it serves me well.▇ ▅ █ ▅ ▇ ▂ ▃ ▁ ▁ ▅ ▃ ▅ ▅ ▅ ▇

I bought the Fitness Reality rack last year, and I have been very happy with it. I bought a couple J hooks and four plate holder bars to go with it from Titan Fitness, and that makes it even better. The short safeties that come with it are OK. but I prefer the J hooks. Once loaded with weights on the plate holders, the rack feels very sturdy and won't budge, no matter what. I overhead press, deadlift, and barbell row on the outside of the rack, but squat and bench inside it. The 3" spacing between holes isn't perfect, but I can work with it, as I can always find a sweet spot to lower the bar on a failed rep.

Not really but putting the bar in and out of the rack can be a hassle too that you should consider, especially if you like to put it away after every session. I'm guessing in an awkward space with a low roof you could have a hell of a time getting the bar into a normal power rack but half rack shouldn't be as bad.

Not sure if this thread is alive or not but I thought I would ask this question here. I am in the process of building a gym in my garage. I am in the market for a power rack. They are between the Titan X3 and the Rogue R-3. I am leaning towards the Titan X3 as it in more within my budget. I have heard some mixed reviews about Titan, however I have also heard they have improved more as of late. Does anyone have any feedback on the Titan X3? Any input would be appreciated. Not sure if it matters or not, but I will be building a platform out of plywood and horse stall mats. I plan on bolting the power rack into the platform.

Rack research
Hello Everyone,
I’ve been researching racks for some time, and knew nothing about them when I started. Thank you for this very informative thread.
There are so many choices out there and it’s certainly daunting to figure out what works best for your own needs.
Rogue, Legend, Powertec, Elitefts (although I see many customer service complaints for EFTS) seem to be some of the top brands.
Does anyone have experience with Fitness reality? I found “Fitness Reality X-Class Light Commercial High Capacity Olympic Power Cage” on Amazon and it seems to have great reviews and similar to the other products offered from the other companies.
(Sorry I could not post the direct link, but if you copy the name in quotes and search on amazon it will come right up, cost with lat pull down is $789)
Any feedback on this one?
Thanks

The Rogue R-4 Power Rack looks awesome, but it seems the cost is far more when you start adding in accessories. I’d like to have a pulley system with this which is why the fitness reality one looks decent.
Rogue offers the Spud Pulley system but it seems to need a lot more room. Does anyone have this pulley setup with your rogue rack?

Looks like the Ironman power cage has made a return, it appeared to be a good rack. And I see they've now thrown in some traditional j hooks.

For your first rack there's little point in spending big money. You won't know what you want until you've got some time in. And there are several DIY pulley threads, not very complicated or expensive.SQ 475# 5/26/17 wraps

Thanks for the reply.
Although, what I want to do is buy a great base rack that will allow me to build on it as I learn more about it. Versus buying one to start and learn and then selling it to buy a new one once I get familiar with it.
The Rogue racks seem to fall in this case ategory, as do the Elite and Legends.
The rogue R-4 should certainly meet all the basic needs and allow future extending through the various accessories they sell.
Is that incorrect thinking? I really do t want to buy a rack only to want to upgrade a year later. Would this really happen with a rogue R-4?

If you are serious about lifting and know you will stick with it, then there is nothing wrong with this approach. On the other hand, don't spend a fortune on a rack you might end up selling in a year or two because it's collecting dust.
Rep Fitness is another company to take a look at. Rogue is generally better, but Rep is getting a lot of good press and wouldn't be a bad way to start.

Well obviously it's your money and just my opinion. Nothing wrong with your plan, it's hard to go wrong with Rogue.
Lots of variables involved, how long have you been lifting? You may find accessories are not necessary. Not to mention most accessories will fit brand to brand, assuming same size uprights. I have Rogue, Sorinex and custom mech6 and BWTG acc on my Body Solid rack. I assumed I would upgrade at some point, found there was no reason to spend more on a rack that wouldn't do anything better than the one I had.SQ 475# 5/26/17 wraps

It would be easy if we could all start out knowing exactly where we will end up. Then we could buy exactly what we need without having to go through any learning curve. But it does not work that way.
I still use the first rack I bought - a used commercial York. It does everything I need. And I could find or make all the accessories I decided that I wanted/needed. Racks are pretty easy to get along with, unless you want to have everything matching and color coordinated, etc. You need to decide what is important to you now and down the road.
As for a pulley system, you may well decide that the rack mounted one does not meet your needs. I started out with a home-made, rack mounted pulley system, graduated to a home-gym for its pulldown, moved to a Body Solid pull-down/low row machine, and finally ended up with a gym quality pulldown/mid row machine with a weight stack. What I thought was a good choice at the time I learned was not, several times over.
Don't stress about buying the perfect rack. Don't buy cheap, 'cuz you will likely grow tired of its inadequacies over time. But any of the mid to high quality racks allow a foundation for growth into the rack that will meet your functional needs.O─O York Barbell Crew #53 O─O
