I'm at 164 lbs and I need to lose 20 lbs, so should i be eating 144g of protein even when im trying to lose 20 lbs and on a calorie watching diet? This will just add more calories

Yep, you need to eat protein and lift heavy to keep what muscle you do have.
For example, if you have a 6 oz chicken breast thats ~200 calories and 40g protein, plus it is delicious and will help keep you fuller longer and help keep you in your calorie budget. You'll notice that when you start eating clean you actually end up eating more food then dirty bulking

you could probably get by with eating less if your goal is just fat loss, but why not utilize everything, when cutting with a lot of excess fat youll be able to build a little muscle while losing fat. i personally think you should still get the 1g/lb or atleast 1g/lean body mass
