    Fat Acceptance Movement

I just discovered there was a Fat Acceptance Movement going on. I came across these very entertaining debates about fat acceptance. If you type MeMe Roth on youtube, you should find plenty more.

In short, they like to compare discrimination against fat people to racism or homophobia. They also advocate against people going on diets (not just fad diets) and trying to lose weight in general. They claim it is unhealthy and that fat people cannot lose weight and maintain it, instead attributing their fatness to genetics (of course, they fail to explain the rise in obesity in America).

    agreed...

I only watched part of one video, but one of the girls didn't seem too bad, mostly "chubby". Chubby acceptance is ok, but it shouldn't have all this publicity. She was something like 180, which is pushing it for a woman, but it's not like it's 200+. No one should be ok with themselves being obese.

I really don't care how people live their lives but what bothers me about these kinds of people is that they're unwilling to change their own unhealthy habits and want society at large to absorb the extra costs that occur because of people like that.

Meaning: If obese people were willing to pay for an extra plane ticket, were willing to personally cover drastically higher health premiums, etc... then I couldn't give two ****s about them. From what I've seen, however, they're the first ones to cry about it and act like it's "discrimination" against them.

Live your life however you see fit but don't try to pass the ramifications and costs of those choices onto anyone else.

I don't think anyone (or most of us anyway) really hate fat people in any way. However, I think it's perfectly justified to encourage people to live a healthy lifestyle and in most cases, that includes losing some weight.

Some people probably are genetically predisposed to being fat (or have a harder time losing the extra weight), but it's not what they claim it is. If I was to guess, probably less than 1% can blame it on genetics. It certainly isn't anywhere close to the 30% obesity rate we have in America.

Anyway, check out this faq. It goes in details why dieting and fat loss is bad etc etc. In their minds, anyone who advocates fat loss is a bigot.

    http://kateharding.net/faq/

What drives me crazy is they claim that even if you eat clean and exercise, if you're "genetically fat", you essentially won't lose any weight unless you eat 800 cals and work out 2 hours everyday. I mean, come on, fat doesn't just appear out of nowhere. You need a caloric surplus to create that fat.

I agree 110% with this. I've seen this Fat Acceptance BS in action. I have a co-worker who's slimmed down like 100 lbs and plans on a good deal more. He comes from a family where EVERYONE is morbidly obese. Now they ridicule him for being smaller and not gorging on food. Fortunately he doesn't give a damn what they think and is continuing to slim down!

i'm sorry, did anyone else catch "waiting for her oscar winning role"?????? LMAO!!!!

on the rest of the topic:

there is a difference between being fat and being overweight/chubby. i don't hate fat people(and i mean FAT), i feel bad for them. i honestly do. they can't enjoy the full extent of life b/c they either can't keep up or are just too big to be able to fit. not everyone is going to have a <10% BF, but being fat and simply saying "well, you are a bigot b/c of blah blah blah" is a complete crock.

the people i hate are those that go on youtube, make a video/website about how they are ok with being fat and we are evil for not being ok with it. she as the right to be size 18, just like i have the right to say, i don't think its healthy and she would benefit from dropping some weight. being a martyr for obesity makes me hate you, not your weight.

edit: weight is just a number. so are blood pressure and cholesterol readings

Overweight people are misinformed and should not be "accepted" in our current society. Instead of wasting their time trying to become "accepted", they should research 3500 calorie surplus = 1lb of fat; learn what maintenance and deficits are. Learn Calories in vs. Calories out and have somebody point them to Wavelengths guide.

After they become informed then preach about "acceptance". Most people don't want to be accepted, they want to be leaner, they are lacking the correct knowledge. After they have the proper knowledge and they still want to be overweight/obese, feel free to preach "acceptance". I'd rather them preach information.

I agree w/ your post except for the bolded (first) sentence.

I know many many people who loathe fat people. One of the first (or final if they are losing the argument) insults to fly out of peoples mouths to overweight people is "fatass, fatty, fatso, lardass, *something dealing w/ their weight*). This is even done in the workplace and fat people are made the butt of jokes in the workplace. Very few people will bat an eye at this NOR raise any objections. Those being joked about will either walk off quietly/quickly, laugh w/ their coworkers while silently fuming or in very few cases take it to their Supervisor/HR. Those who do take it to their Sup/HR will mostly be ignored as it is not considered harassment such as other terms are defined (sexual, racial, religious harassment, etc). This, atm, is the only socially acceptable form of harassment.

Personally, I think most people are too thin-skinned and most of the items in the "harassment" section are there 'cuz people cry to easily. But being that we have them defined as such; true "fat discrimination" should be placed in the same category.

I personally see no problem with this movement. The people who dont want to lose weight can join that movement. If it makes them happy, who am I to complain ?

The problem with these folks is that they are NOT happy with who they are and they do not accept themselves as they are.... BUT they want the society to accept them as they are ,so they can feel better about themselves.... That's back-ass-words if you ask me...

It's like saying " I dont want to change so I want the world to change ...that way I can stay the same and feel better"!

    LMAO...

Happened to me the other day on my way back from ATL. Saw a 400+lb dude in line and said sucks to have to sit next to him.

Got on the plane early, he got close and close to my isle - looked up and said the middle seat is mine. I got up looked back at all the ppl smirking at me and couldnt help but sarcastically smile back at them.

Back was twisted the entire flight and had no right arm rest. My back killed after. THANK GOD he didnt smell.

    Obese people gross me out.

Then you're NOT ok with the movement...or the idea they're trying to promote anyway.

It's like they wanna drag people down with them down the fat path like it's such a great thing to be fat.

quote from one of these people:

never kept me from living my life . In fact if someone told me they could give me a magic pill that would make me thin for ever , I would turn it down . This is who I am , and Im VERY happy with that . Its a shame that ppl like you cant see that in your own life . Im very happily married , love being a mother and a plus sized model , just bc I wanted a ''hobby'' . I lead an amazeing life and by God , no matter what you shallow minded folks out there thing . Im FAT AND HAPPY ! Not to mention -
    yea right, i buy that...

This whole "Everyone must accept (and love) me" stuff really needs to go. Institutionalized discrimination is one thing, but giving such validation to what people think of you in general is over the top. It's not my job to accept you for the fat person you are. It's yours. And it's mine to accept my fatness or change it. Really. Why all the validation for social acceptance movements? I'm a feminist (muhaha) and understand that social opinions bleed into occupational culture. And I did hear on talk radio recently some folks talking about how the American public would never elect the governor of NJ, regardless of his qualifications, as President because of his weight. That, indeed, is a depressing thought. I wouldn't have any problems voting for an overweight person. Hmmm. I seem to be waffling on the opinion I thought I had. From a strictly ideaological standpoint, though, I don't like the idea of acceptance movements and I don't think that the pushers want 'acceptance' - they want equal glorification. And I disagree that anyone should advocate for acceptance of something that is unhealthy, like obesity, yet I don't think a culture that systematically discriminates against overweight people, smokers, gays, etc etc etc is a healthy culture. But then I don't think a culture is healthy overall if individuals within it need constant approval and affirmation. Interestin' topic.

I will be "racist" to fat people until the day I die.

    Being fat is a choice.

(I do realize some people DO have problems preventing weight loss, however my mom was 400lbs because of a thyroid disease..... she is now 105lbs and maintains it. Everyone can get skinny)

Only problem is they will use BMI. Even BIO is somewhat useless.

After they become informed then preach about "acceptance". Most people don't want to be accepted, they want to be leaner, they are lacking the correct knowledge. After they have the proper knowledge and they still want to be overweight/obese, feel free to preach "acceptance". I'd rather them preach information.

She actually talks about "calories in vs calories out". See above link. She dismissed it because after one year people gained their weight and then some. She doesn't want to hear about diets unless you kept the weight off for over five years, and then, she thinks you're a statistical anomaly anyways.
