It amazes me to see a person smoking prior to the gym. I live in L.A. and people sitting in their car smoking weed is much more common.

The number of bodybuilders or fitness enthusiasts out there who smoke is suprisingly high. I've seen many gym patrons having a post-workout cigarette instead of a shake or I run into them at a bar and see them ligthing up every time they go to suck back a cold one. I myself was one of these people, I smoked for close to 10 years, many of those years while playing multiple sports and bodybuilding as well. And although I was seeing gains in the gym, I still had a major flaw in my lifestyle, I was a "pack a day" smoker. Shortness of breath and low stamina were the worst, and later I would find out that my gains would have been even greater had I not smoked. But never the less I did end up quitting, for any of you on here who do happen to smoke, even just casually, I urge you to stop. Here's how I did it.

Find a reason to quit! If it's to save money, look better or smell better, just find a reason. No matter how trivial the reason may be, any reason that will cause you to quit is a good one.

    1. Stop right now! Don't set a quit date because too many times I've set a quit date and ended up pushing it back to the point where I had smoked another week/month/year and so on. If you wanna quit, no time like the present.

    2. Get rid of all the cigarettes around you! If you have a carton or a couple of packs in your house, get rid of them. It's too easy to say, "Well, I'll just smoke this last pack." Then before you know it, you've started smoking again. This may be hard if you live with someone who smokes, in this case they should keep them away from you and be supportive of your needs.

    3. Avoid cues to smoke! If you always smoke at the bar, don't go there for a while. If you always smoke with a beer or coffee, stay away from those two. I had to give up beer for a while, but sooner or later you'll be able to have a beer without the need for a nicotine fix.

    4. Work Out! Hey all of us do this already, so we know about the flood of endorphins we get during exercise. Something we definitely want in absence of our favourite stimulant.

    5. Replace smoking with another activity! I chewed gum. Whenever I had a craving, I chewed a piece of REGULAR gum! Those quit smoking gums are nasty! Try to find something that you can do to replace your habit like chewing gum or drinking a glass of water.

    6. Think to yourself, "I will not have a cigarette today" rather than, "I will never have a cigarette ever again." It's easier to take things one day at a time than telling yourself that you will never have something ever again. Pretty soon those days add up and they'll turn into years of smoke free living.

After I quit, I noticed a difference within a couple of days. My taste buds were back and I could actually smell again (Which is both good and bad). Within a month I had gained an additional15 lbs. which was good because I had been lifting the whole time, so most of the gains were muscle. I felt a lot stronger in the gym and my stamina was good. Smoking has been known to raise cortisol in some people, there by depriving them of better muscle gains. Plus, the lack of beer in my diet probably helpd out as well.

For a while, I was a social misfit, a hermit of sorts, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons. Now, I can have a beer and hang out with people who smoke and not be tempted. There are times when I really want to have a cigarette, but those cravings last no longer than a minute. If you do slip up and smoke, get back on the horse and quit again. It took me numerous times of trial and error to actually quit, so don't get discouraged. As bodybuilders and athletes the effects cigarettes on the body can be extremely counterproductive. Indeed, the greatest thing I ever did to further my progress was to quit smoking. I haven't had a cigarette in a year, not a single one, don't fall into the trap of thinking that "One cigarette won't kill you!" It may not, but the problem is, that one cigarette could turn into a pack every day.

For those of you who don't smoke, I envy you, don't ever start!
Great post, really motivates me to quit!

I've never smoked in my life, but I've chewed tobacco since I was 17, about 2 cans worth every single day. Finally made the decision to quit, what a disgusting habit and I'm ashamed to admit I've ever partaken in it. This is a great article.

Very good article. I've lost loved ones to lung cancer, due to smoking and it's such a slow, painful process to watch someone with lung cancer. Hoping anyone here struggling with giving up smoking, continues to fight the good fight.

Smoking horrible i smoked for ten yearz. What helped me quit was my metabolism was extremly high and i was trying to bulk eating stupid amounts of Food. Leaving the gym and lighting up. Most peopld can get through the nicotine withdrawl but not the actual habit is what people miss. I quit cold turkey and and been smoke free for almost three years.
its possible to quit. Imma make a thread for all you broz struggleing next week.

Good chit op, it was my New Years resolution 1997. I smoked my last one at 11:55 that night, threw the remainder of the pack in the trash and that was it. I had a lingering headache for about a week and a half, cravings were a beast after meals but I did it.

Haven't had a cigarette since 3 October 2014 and feeling great! Just thought I'd throw that out there.
For me, quitting sucked azz for the first week then it gradually got easier and easier until now, I don't even think about it except to write this post.

I never got addicted to smoking (I hate the smell), but I understand how people have problems with it. From therapy to self-help, sometimes things get too complicated and a little simplicity goes a long way. Fine article here, thanks.

I smoked from around 13 years old for 28 years, between 2-3 packs per day. I always had in my mind I would stop when I would turn 40, for some stupid reason I thought I would be old and wouldn't need to party a lot. Never did.
When I woke up, on my 41st birthday, I just went to a pharmacy store, bought a pack of champix and stoped it. No previous thinking, setting a date, excusing my self to enjoy my birthday, waiting for Monday etc. It was just my mind that cliked, also champix was heavily promoted with a succes rate greater than 60%.
I was nauseated for some time, headaches etc but I hunged in there. I had experiences from late nights with drinking and smoking that felt as bad or worse. Made it with my first serious effort, best gift ever to my self.
I did try nicotine patches etc previously with zero results.

I'm coming up on my 2 year "Quit-iversary" and it is the best decision I have ever made (and the worst was to start in the first place!) But there are definitely times/days I still (psychologically) crave a cigarette. Honestly, what keeps me motivated to STAY quit is exercise/lifting, because I just don't really see smoking + exercise working out too well.

So, I'd just like to add to the OP's suggestions -- CONTINUE to find reasons to STAY quit even after you have. I think that's important. If you lose sight of WHY you quit in the first place, it can be easy to get caught back up in it again (which, happened to me in the past, the first time I quit)

However, if you do have them, you must rely on your self control, and think about that, as opposed to buying more. Just a differnt take, probably not best for everyone...
Yeah, as for quitting anything, everyone is different and their strategy has to be adapted to them. I still smoke but I've been clean from alcohol.

    Holy snap.
I have a client who smokes and I haven't been able to understand why he hasn't been able to quit after the stress it causes him, but now I feel I grasp his struggle.

Quitnet money and time savings is pretty cool. I hope it'll help motivate him to quit.
As for the nico-gum replacement, I agree that it would still feed the addictive chemical and tastes unpleasant. Gotta find a total substitute, like regular gum or drinking water.

Awesome, awesome. I'm really glad you posted this, thank you for the insight.
My father was a smoker so I've been around it but he always looked shameful when I caught him smoking, so it was never something I thought would benefit me. I had no idea there was such a strong community of people looking to quit smoking and stay off it.

    Be strong and carry on.

Have been smoking a pack a day for 6 years now, and I've not smoked for 2 months now and thought I'd share what I did.

I heard very good recommendations on laser accupuncture in the ears, so I gave it a try even though I was pretty sure it was either a scam or placebo, but it really made a world of difference. It took all the cravings for nicotine and the withdrawal symptoms, it really made it very easy to quit. The habit was what got to me though, I had to get an e-cigarette and juice without nicotine to stand it, without it I kept "searching" for something with my hands. However every week I use it less and less, I've come to a point where I often forget where it is and don't care about it for several hours.

The last thing you need circulating in your blood as a bodybuilder is carbon monoxide. It''ll totally impede nitric oxide production and prevent maximal amounts of oxygen and other growth-inducing nutrients/elements reaching the muscle.

    No Nicotine is ever good

    Well said Sonny

I believe smoking also increases the amount of dopamine in the body hence the addicting effect. But what i notice is that alot of people i know that smoke use it to relief stress and I can't blame them for doing so.

It was interfering with my progress so I cut back. I feel it's almost impossible to quit though if I'm drinking or post sex. Or if I'm pissed about something.
