I hear ya bud, it hurt a bit for me at first (just started 3-4 months ago after seeing Layne Norton's excellent work with it).

I've always been a decent DL'er. Pulled 405 at 19 (back then it was raw but a mixed grip). These days I enjoy not using the mixed grip as that can be trouble for imbalances and possible biceps issues.

Anyways, to the hook grip. I just checked my thumbs where they touch the bar and the skin is lightly callused, but not as much as I thought would be.....since even the 500 didn't hurt at all.

I don't have overly big hands for how tall I am, but they are large enough I can make good use of the hook grip.

I'd say keep it up and you'll get used to it.

Hmm. I've made a habit of equally training both sides of my mixed grip. It's great motivation too, since I have to get an even number of reps in. I'll sometimes end up shooting for a weight that I think I can do five with, switch my grip on the fourth rep, and then psych myself out to get the sixth rep up for balance's sake (I have crazy OCD about things like this).

I think I'm going to start using hook grip for shrugs. I hate using mixed grip for them.

No hate here, but why is your deadlift only 95 pounds heavier after 11 years? Did you just not take it seriously, or did your priority stop being strength?

Good call on the change up of the mixed grip, that should help even things out.

Yeah I stopped deadlifting and squatting for many, many years. Worked the retail management grind from age 23-27 so I was still training but just quick stuff here and there.

Picked back up really serious in bodybuilding in fall 2007, and got some great results (deadlift PR of 425), but the move from the midwest to Hawaii in summer 2008 I was 220lbs and got all the way down to 182 last fall (got into more cardio stuff and taking full advantage of the weather here cost me a ton of muscle).

Been back at it since Oct 09, really pleased with where I'm at, never thought I'd hit 450 deadlift, let alone 500. But now 585 sounds pretty sweet. Six plates has a nice ring to it.

Sounds like you worked hard, and now you're living the good life.

You're still incline DB pressing nearly twice what I can do. That's motivation for me to keep going if anything ever was. Gotta catch up with you by the time you're an old geezer.

    Welcome to our journey.

    The rules:
    -If you deadlift, you post.
-If you think about deadlifting, you post.
-If you are planning an awesome PR, you bring a camera.
-If you fail a deadlift, you post.
-If you win, you don't really win. Keep posting.
-We will try to arrange for insane mod reps for winners.
-Monetary prizes can be discussed at a later point in time.
-For your six-plate deadlift, you may only use a belt, gloves and chalk. NO STRAPS.
    -Sumo deadlifts allowed.
-Since this contest includes people with varying deadlift strength, we will judge a winner in the "most progress" category, the "strongest" category, and the "relatively strongest" category (using the Wilk's Coefficient: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilks_Coefficient).

    Current PR's:
    The4thMan: 230x3
    -Lucifer: 300
    matt297: 308
    Basely: 375x2
    Ironlife: 420
    acm807: 425
    Musicality: 425
    400Lb Gorilla: 405x3
    Jrahe: 450
    Blizzard589: 465
    Justin-27: 500

Sounds fun, I'm in should be interesting while cutting for contest's in Sept and Oct lol.

I figured out an awesome way to keep the original post showing updated information.

I'm going to take screenshots of the new PR's when they get posted, and it will update the 1st post! Awesome, huh?

I'm dying laughing over here at the mega awesome use of the gifs in this thread.

    Thread was win.

    Now it's epic wyn.

Props Mr. 440x4 above. I think I could match that, but doubtfully beat it. The 455 warmup to 500 was certainly not something I'd want to do more than....oh two times.

Thanks on the Incline DB props musicality....too bad it transferred zilch to my bb bench and Im back to suckville with it.
Really? How much can you bench? Have you tried a wider grip? I'd assume you're not triceps dominant if you're inclining that much with DB's but can't bench a lot.

Weirdly enough I am triceps dominant. My incline the rep aren't as wide of an arch as others (at least I think). My flat bench is terrible, I hate flat bench. I can incline what I flat. Shoot I can seated MP 205x6, yet my flat is like 225x8. It'll get up though, I'm training it twice a week and doing incline, close grip BB to get some serious drive from my triceps. Being 6'3" sucks with my long ass arms (great for deadlift, awful for bench). Plus I do chest to full lockout on each rep, nothing partial like I see guys with shorter arms than me do.

    Just gotta work on it.

    Just gotta work on it.
I also always train full ROM. I hate when people clean a weight above their head, for example, and then proceed to only work the upper half of the ROM exclusively (I realize that this is a good method of training a weak point, but some people only work their upper ROM).

It's so much ego! I bet that even on a site like this, half the people posting stats are exaggerating.

Honestly man, if you trained your flat bench for a month it would be ahead of everything else. Just get the powerlifting arch going if you're afraid of the ROM.

And hold on... THIS IS A DEADLIFT THREAD. What's going on?

    Deadlifts (5/30/10, 5-6 PM):
    225x8, 315x8 (had more in me), 365x4, 405xfail, 315x5 (didn't have more in me)

Feeling kinda drained today. I'm not at all used to going to the gym before having 3-4 meals in my system, so I think my weakness is once again caused by today's diet. When I was in college, I always lifted after 9 PM and I've grown accustomed to that. I also didn't have a belt with me today, which I'm used to using once I get past 385 or so. My PR is 315x12 and 425x1 - the 1RM was with a belt. Regardless, I feel like I got a good workout in today.

    My ass is sore.
