After reading this story I am now a little concerned at the 800mcg in Orange Triad.
Is this BS or are we overdosing on Folic Acid??

The article states that the studies where done with 800mcg and 1000mcg where negative side effects were prevalent... that is double what most multivitamins have. Although if you're eating foods that contain a great deal of folic acid already and you're supplementing 400mcg on top of that... it might be time for the supplement industry to lower folic acid to 100 or 200mcg in their multivitamins.
Below are two quotes from that article but of course... folks have to read the whole article not just the headline
Stay in the safe range "If you're eating a balanced diet and not taking a multivitamin, you're probably fine," says Karin Michels, ScD, PhD, an associate professor in the department of epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health. But if you pop supplements and eat a lot of [leafy greens, orange juice]*, cereal, a lot of bread, and a lot of white rice, you may want to rethink your consumption of folic acid. If it's not possible for you to become pregnant, lowering your intake to 400 mcg won't hurt — and might help save your life
...research links high doses to lung and prostate cancers. In one study conducted in Norway, which doesn't fortify foods, supplementation with 800 mcg of folic acid (plus B12 and B6) daily for more than 3 years raised the risk of developing lung cancer by 21 percent. Another, in which men took either folic acid or a placebo, showed those consuming 1,000 mcg of folic acid daily had more than twice the risk of prostate cancer. And a new worry recently came to light when scientists discovered the liver has limited ability to metabolize folic acid into folate — which means any excess continues circulating in the bloodstream. "Unlike folate, folic acid isn't found in nature, so we don't know the effect of the excess," says Smith.
*the article mentioned other natural sources of folic acid earlier in the text, this mention was added to the list in the first quote above.Last edited by acwild; 03-29-2010 at 03:30 PM. Reason: add bolded quotes from the article

This is a somewhat scary, not only do the multi vitamins we take contain high levels of folic acid, most N.O. products contain 100+ mcg of folic acid (White Flood, N.O. Explode, etc).
Are there any good multi-vitamins out there that contain no folic acid, how about N.O. products?
I feel like an idiot, my father age 66 just got diagnosed today with prostate cancer. My grandfather who I thought passed away from a stroke when I was a child, I learn today he actually died of prostate cancer. So my odds of getting it are pretty good......and over the years I've taken my share of multi-vitamins and N.O. products. I'll be getting a PSA check this week.

certain foods in america are fortified with folic acid. its pretty hard to get around so i wouldnt stress about it. then again, if i used a multivitamin, i would use a multivitamin containing no folic acid at all.
btw, it may just be that folic acid increases the rate of cancer growth once you already have cancer. this is already an issue with many ingredients that we take and are found in many supplements.

the folate thats naturaly occuring in foods is fine its the synthetic form in vitamins they are talking about.
well orange triad already has 800mcg then with the white flood another 400mcg then whatever foods your eating that may have folic acid added to them your getting 1200mcg just from the supps.

Here's the latest info I could find, dated March 2009.
http://www.webmd.com/prostate-cancer...te-cancer-risk
It's hit or miss with any of the studies, this article states "folic acid was found to increase the risk for prostate cancer by 163%."
According to this article, the study was done on males with a daily dosage of 1mg, which they go on to say is double the daily recommended value.
Who knows? Everything we eat or drink these days help/hurt us in some way.
I guess the best approach to take is to get annual physicals, ask your doctor questions, and stay away from the internet.
