It's just good gym etiquette. That's like asking why people to bother to wrack weight if the next guy is just gonna put it back on.

    Exactly, it is proper etiquette.

Same as re-racking weights, this of course assumes the person using it immediatley after you does not ask you to leave them.

I just benched 190lbs 3x5 for my workout today and I STILL start out with an empty bar. I do not appreciate people leaving a plate on each side, both because I shouldn't have to take them off due to the lazy SOB in front of me but, mostly, because it makes it that much more difficult to determine when nobody is using it.

That you canít sanitise the whole environment youíre training in. Donít get me wrong, I understand completely that its not good manners to leave sweat stains everywhere you sit etc.

I was talking purely about cross infection via the envrinmont you are training in.

This is one reason why some people use liquid chalk as they workout, the benefits of chalk (somewhat) and it sanitizes.

It is also why some people, like myself, make sure to wash their hands immediately after using the gym.

If you sit/lie down in somebody's sweat/swamp ass because they left it there you can't be rid of that by washing or sanitizing your hands. And metal bars aren't going to hold sweat and bread micro organisms the way the pads in machines, benches, etc might. (not a biologist!)

    Yes.

What's your point? That doing so doesn't make a lot of sense? I don't see anybody disagreeing with that specific statement.

    I hate when . . .

They spray the machine instead of spraying the towel and then wiping. They climb off the treadmill having barely even broken a sweat, soak the whole machine with cleaning spray, then wipe off about 1/3 of it. Drives me nuts. Just saying . . .

Iím not trying to start some sort of flame war with you. I agree that itís nasty when someone leaves their sweat all over equipment. Iím not a biologist either just a nurse in training. But eliminating cross infection in a gym like environment is pretty much futile.
And Iím with you on the liquid chalk, I use it myself, the alcohol content will have some benefit, for what you handle at least.

Yes. And I handle almost everything. Freeweight barbell squats, deadlift, overhead press, power cleans, pullups, chinups...all I do is walk around in shoes and hold things. The only time I really touch anything other than metal, with my hands, is for bench.

I must be the only one who lays the towel I bring with me down on the bench/equipment so there's no need to wipe anything. I never see many people bring one and if they do it's just for wiping their head.

I think I got into the habit because in the military gyms it was a rule that you had to use your towel as a cover. I still do it out of habit. Feels good man.

No it doesn't bother me because it's the rules of the establishment, much like it doesn't bother me when the car ahead of me stops for a red light.

At least in our country, if you don't like the rules you always have the option to start your own establishment and set your own rules. Simply schedule a meeting with your lawyer, CPA and commercial banker and you're underway. If there's a strong market for like minded people that hate the spray and wipe down, you could bring in a fortune.

getting someone else's sweat on your hands from a barbell that dries relatively fast is not like laying on a bench and resting your head on a damp sweaty pad.

    That too.

I use my gym bag + bottle(s) for that, though.

And if in the rack my belt slung over the safety rail, typically, as well.

Fortunately (at least in terms of this issue) there aren't many people that need to use the squat rack, and there are a lot of benches.
