Just my two cents on gloves:
Padded gloves always felt weird because I lost the tactile feedback from the bar.
I bought my ex the Nike gloves (which are basically just a thin layer of leather) and those seemed to work pretty well at preventing callouses.
My two cents on callouses:
They are awesome.~ Never Having Kids So Can Save Up For a 4K TV and a PLP Computer Setup Crew ~

I wear my callouses with pride as well
I find that gloves impede my grip when lifting heavy, especially when deadlifting. I do have small callouses but who cares?
I will say that the bars we have at home are quite rough in the grip area so it will sometimes hurt for me to do heavy deadlifts. If your gym allows chalk this can help and if you own your own bars you can file down the grip area so it isn't so sharp.

I have always worn gloves and I still get a bit calloused. Now I'm lifting sans gloves on my heavy deads and it friggin sucks. My hands are so sensitive after all those years in the gloves.

I used gloves once. They get stinky. There was this awful smell in my gym bag that stunk up the truck. Gloves went in the trash. I don't wear gloves and will start using my straps again. I use straps for heavy rows, pulldowns and DB shrugs. I want to start doing deadlifts to pack on muscle soon and know my callouses will increase.

I'm pretty new to lifting (just 11 weeks - but, yay me!), and about 8 weeks into it (we train 6 days a week), I got some gloves. Nike, not leather, but a synthetic material with just a bit of padding. I really like them. I suppose I don't lift near the weights that some of you do, so I don't find the gloves interfere.
But the problem is, the fingers don't go quite high enough. They fall just below the middle knuckle, so I still have some callouses to contend with.
Because I give my Mr. Flexy a massage every night, I want soft hands. I use an Avon callous cream (intended for feet, I suppose) that's cheap as borscht and works great.

Welcome to the "mens" side of the gym. Whether you lift heavy or light the use of gloves I think is a matter of preference. I don't have a real strong grip and find that when I am using heavier weights the gloves give me more grip than without.
My gloves also are only 1/2 finger and I get the callouses but figure it is something to contend with I use Lubriderm constantly to keep the hands soft.
Good luck on your lifting and don't let those men bully you around, before you know it they will be looking at you and laughing at their friends because you are lifting more than them!!!!Gym, work, mountain bike or road ride, getting out and doing something daily!!!!
