Posterior capsular contracture is a common cause of shoulder pain in which the patient presents with restricted internal rotation and reproduction of pain. Increased anterosuperior translation of the humeral head occurs with forward flexion and can mimic the pain reported with impingement syndrome; however, the patient with impingement syndrome presents with normal range of motion.

Basically your shoulder has a capsule surrounding it, much like any other joint. The thing about the shoulder capsule though is that it plays a much more important role in stabilisation compared to other joints.

what research has found is that in athletes that usually work overhead is that the posterior capsule becomes tight (baseball players, weight lifters, swimmers).

this is attributed to whats called anterior laxity, or basically the humerus moving forward in the joint when it should be maintained in the middle by the rotator cuff muscles.

So the body's response? Lock the posterior portion of the shoulder to prevent anterior glide - problem is this effects good shoulder mechanics.

Anyway the best way to prevent this is of course make sure to always stretch and do rotator cuff exercises, particularly ones that work the subscapularis.

    Training regularly but no progress?
You need one or more of these: more food, more weight, more reps or more rest.
