Bodyrock.tv cardio - is this OK?

    Hey all

has anyone looked at bodyrock.tv? Its a fitness and diet site run by a couple - the woman is in CRACKING shape. they have heaps of metabolic cardio drills (mostly tabata style) and some weight lifting routines.

just wondering, is a 20 minute tabata-style drill OK for a day's cardio?

ie. 5 exercises, 4 minutes each, tabata style. all stuff like push ups, jump lunges, skip rope, etc - high intensity.

i am trying to drop fat and people here have said to stick to 20/30 mins of HIIT 3 x week at the most. it's hard to adjust to!

So, would this routine be OK for a day's cardio?

Well considering that you don't have to do any cardio at all if you don' t want to, anything is "ok" so I don't know what you mean there.

I have done some of her workouts. i love them.

I recommend death by workout if you want to have a sore ass for a week.

Just checked out some of her workouts. They look pretty awesome!!! Makes me want to try a few I think some of them would be great for cardio. For my cardio I do Rachel Cosgroves Metabolic circuits and it slightly similar. They are so good, but guarenteed to kick your booty!!!! I think stuff like this is more fun and challenging then boring steady state cardio!

    awesome thanks girls.

what i really mean is, is 20 mins enough to be significant and have an effect on fat burning? i just didnt know if they were really considered 'hard core' enough workouts. i'm still in that mode where i feel that anything under 40mins is useless!

they do kick my butt though...

I've done several of her workouts and I love them.

I always been under the impression that 20-30 minutes of HIIT is more than sufficient.

I do tabata for my cardio.. 10 minute warm up, 16 minutes of tabata intervals, and a cooldown and it's helped to drop my body fat!

So glad you asked this question. I am taking a break from lifting and am trying out her workouts for the next month. I just can't believe that she has such a lean, muscular build with only 20 minutes HIIT. I have done 4 of her videos and they are tough but can't see how it is going to build muscle.

Well, not only 20 minutes HIIT. She also diets like mad.

Do Death by workout, my butt was sore for a week. Edit... just noted that I posted that above.

Tomorrow I will do the Butt focused workout. I love her interval style stuff.

    it's such a great site.

she definitely diets hard - she advocates eating entirely clean with 6 small meals a day. but looking at her portion sizes she's probably on a permanent low cal diet. who knows. she looks fab though!

i just did the 'best 20 minute cardio workout' and it was tough but not as high-heart rate as i thought. tonight i might do the '20 min cardio workout' as well - that one is much tougher!

ajangel, what do you do for your tabata? bike, run?

    thanks!

i used to feel like anything under 30-40min was useless too. however i never was able to get my body fat below 16%. Jan 09 my resolution was to try (and stick with) 20 min HIIT sessions 2x a week (I lift 5 x a week and walk my dog every day too just FYI). I'll do anything from running up and walking down the flights of stairs in my home to jump rope intervals and also running/walking intervals. I know hold steady at about 14.5% body fat! the nice thing about HIIT or programs like HIIT is a concept called excess post exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Excess_...en_consumption). you burn more calories through out the day having done a HIIT session than a steady state cardio session.

ps- i just found bodyrock.tv and i am intrigued as well!

    great, thanks kmorrissey!

thats interesting what you said about HIIT. I've been TRYING to lower cardio and up calories to get my post-undereating metabolism to speed up. but it's hard!

at the moment, i do 20 min HIIT (like bodyrock) 3 x week and 10mins of intervals after my 3 lifting sessions.

do u think i should not do the cardio after my lifting?

i might post this as a thread as well...

    thanks!

Neither! LOL. I go to a tabata class where we do a lot of plyometric moves and other moves for the 20 seconds like mountain climbers, burpees, jump squats, etc. It's fun and my heart rate gets up in the 180's during the intervals!
