I don't know how many different ways I can articulate this.....There are several aspects to bodybuilding, that must be followed correctly, that are responsible for the majority of the results. However, the finer details, although responsible for a smaller portion of the results and unable to compensate for a deficiency in the greater details, should not just be dismissed. I agree that people should not become overwhelmed with these RELATIVELY minor details, I just think that they should be given credence.

maybe your missing the point of the thread. It is not dismissing fine details nor dismissing their importance. This has been written from a bb.com point of view. Most of the questions posed day in day out are about details that shouldn't be of great concern by the majority of posters. Its about getting down and really highlighting what is important; solid diet and nutrition and rest. Everything else is secondary to this.

my post above is merely mimicking this statement. the gusto of the thread is about the backbone of lifting and what takes priority (the 20%). The rest of this thread is the 80% that, right now, is irrelevant (the arguing over minor detail).

its late and im proly not explaining thinks very well. I will now attempt to distract you with exotic dancing...

Yes exactly its written from a bb.com point of view. The average poster is waaayyyy too lazy to even properly deal with the main points let alone the finer points. Yet somehow they love to spend hundreds of posts talking about finer points. Thats what this is really about.

Also the other point is that no one really will be able to predict the finer points ahead of time. You need a fair bit of base work experience for it. Yet this is what they try & do. They are all looking for numerical tricks that will somehow give a magical formula for a routine & diet with magical results.

I am one of those people that easily fall for advertisments on how you can improve your workouts. I always buy muslce mags and buy expensive supplements. If you think about it, supplements are largely the same way: the best, proven ingredients give you most of the results.

Supplements are just that: supplemental. There is no substitute for hard work and a good diet.

I used to do that too. But once stopped worrying about everything and got back to basics, I finally started to get somewhere.

I was exactly the same. I used too many supplements that prolly did nothing for me (now I only take protein), and I would run + hide if I saw a "big bad carb". Now I am way less obsessive in what I eat and more relaxed in my overall schedule and I am still seeing great results and I now have the opportunity to enjoy my results.

    Great post!!

"Gracie is doing anything he can to hang on....See, Royce isn't choking him with his legs there because he has no leverage. He's just trying to hold Severn back."

Seconds later, Severn taps to the first triangle choke in MMA. Classic.

A good quote, from Dave Draper, which goes right along with the theme of this thread:

"Get rid of the notion that you need to know more and more. The learning is in the doing."

Good insight. I'm starting to believe that people focus on the 80% because it's the easy stuff. Tweaking your supplements, tweaking your exercises, etc. It's easy to get lost in the minutiae because you don't want to put in the hard work.

In that light, the appendix to the 80/20 rule is that the 20% is generally the stuff that sucks: Consistency. Intensity. Discipline. Diet.

The corollary is that the 20% of the exercises that you hate the most will give you the most gains: Squats, Deadlifts, etc. And rather than focusing on getting good at those, people focus on the 80% of the exercises that are easy.

Moral: if you're not seeing gains, simplify and do more of the stuff that sucks.
