Need help selecting a PROTEIN please!

Ok, so I've been taking Muscle Milk Light, but am looking to try something different. My workout routine consists of an equal amount of cardio and weight lifting. I am trying to lose fat by doing the cardio and become more toned by lifiting weights. I'm thinking I need a whey protein that is low in fat abd carbs, but would help repair my muscles after my workouts. I have always been one to take protein, but need to know what would be best as far as nutrition for what I need and what brands and flavors taste better than others. Thanks for your help in advance!

So basically you are looking to switch from MM which is a blended protein with fat and carbs, to a stright whey that is lower in carbs and fat? I just want to make sure I understand what you are asking.

I use Syntha 6, which is closer to MM than a stright whey, so it probably isn't what you are looking for. Optimum Nutrition is a brand I have seen a lot of positive reviews about.

Maybe try searching the store section and looking at the reviews and seeing what is highest ranked? They have a top 50 list too, and you can find the most popular proteins sold there.

Edit: I forgot, the main site has a protein search tool too that you may want to check out.

My favorite ones are the Dedicated Woman brand. It's sweetened with lohan (similar to stevia) and it's really good. The only problem is it's always on backorder so it takes a little while longer to arrive. The BSN Lean Dessert flavors are really good too, but they are a bit pricey and only come in small containers. Damn they are tasty though. Those are sweetened with Splenda, and at one point I got a little addicted and started having G-I issues from all the sucralose.

A lot of people swear by ON Gold Standard, but I think they are watery and I didn' t love the taste. I bought the variety pack once and only had a couple flavors that I liked. Some were downright nasty. I think it's popular because it's a great value. If you can spend the extra $$ though, then I'd go with BSN or Dedicated Woman.

I am obsessed with my BSN Lean Dessert in banana pudding. It's to die for. GREAT taste, great texture, no weird aftertaste, etc. Just truly delicious. As you said, it's about $17-$20 per 1.39lb tub, which is only 18 servings...so, if someone wanted to have a shake every day of the month (or heaven forbid, 2!), you would almost need 2 tubs to last you every month, at the cost of about $40/month.

I started off with Muscle Milk Light. Didn't like it, too many calories, etc. I then switched to EAS chocolate protein powder which I found at Costco. Good price and pretty good flavor - reminds me of Instant Breakfast. I bought the ON sampler box with the 16 flavors and thought some were pretty decent. The two chocolates were good. I liked the caramel/toffee/fudge, the strawberry banana and the regular banana. The prices on the ON are so much better than the Lean Dessert.

Whatever you do, I would avoid most vanilla flavors. I haven't found a single one I liked.

Really? I usually like the vanilla ones. Dedicated Woman's Vanilla is great, and the first protein I ever liked was Designer Whey's Vanilla Preyline. On the other hand, I can't stand banana flavored anything. lol

Best tasting whey isolate I have ever had is Syntrax twisted cherry or strawberry kiwi. Optimum natural vanilla is a mix of concentrate and isolate, its pretty good.
The syntrax has no hint of milkiness at all. The optimum of coarse is a more traditianal milky flavor.
I personally dont care for artificially sweetened proteins because the taste stays on my tongue all day.

My fave is ON's Platinum Hydro Whey in Velocity Vanilla. (30g protein,8.8g BCAA';s,0g lactose,2g carb, and 1g fat) Relatively expensive, tho

I have to agree about Syntrax's flavor. However, would suggest that you do a search of the forums or even a web search from around 2007 and decide if you want to support their products or not.

I also love Syntha-6 as a meal replacement (note carbs and cholesterol), but also use it in recovery and am never sore - the recovery is that good, Imo. 4everFruit tastes good and has 100 cals, 0 fat, 1g carb, 25g protein. You can order samples from both companies and BB offers samples of Syntrax in the store.

Lean Dessert Protein tastes good as well, but if you do not like a thicker consistency, it may not be for you.

some really common ones are on's 100% whey, syntha-6, myofusion, xf ultra peptide, bsn lean dessert, muscle gauge. check out bb's protein finder thing and also in the supplements section they have a thread on the best tasting ones, and you can then look up the macros and see what matches what you want. i love protein powder and switch things up often. i currently have the complete protein diet in the am, on pwo, and bake with all the whey or complete whey.

I just switched to Allmax Isoflex..... AMAZING SUFF!!! I got the vanilla because I just finished chocolate, but I will get chocolate next time. The vanilla is a bit bland, I thought it would be more versatile than the chocolate.

The nutrition breakdown per serving is perfect for what you(and I) are looking for:

    Calories: 111
    Fat: 0.1g
    Carbs: 0.5g
    Protein: 27g !!!

I have been impressed with it s far. Good lick with your search

I use Whey Factors by Natural Factors. it's sweetened with stevia, which i like because a lot of others have artificial sweeteners and i dont like the aftertaste, and i have also found that it mixes instantly with water. the vanilla goes in the oatmeal in the morning, and the chocolate is good by itself!

Hey, could you elaborate on this? I'm a big "cake batter" fan in a lot of sense- literally when baking, ice cream flavors, etc. I tried the ON cake batter and it was watery (like most of their flavors).

Could you compare Muscle Gauge to ON or BSN Lean Dessert?...

I'm dying for some new protein flavors. My vanilla and chocolate are boring the heck out of me.

I've got ON Gold Standard Cookies & Cream flavour - thought it was great the first tub or two but now I am SO sick of it, I am dying for a change! It's just so very sweet! Their double chocolate (I think that was what it was) tasted good though.

I'm thinking of trying Magnum Quattro next time round (chocolate flavour) - anyone any experience of it?

Great suggestions out there. I can't wait to try some of the ones you girls are talking about! I am relatively new to the protein thing but I am switching it around already so that I don't get sick of any flavor.

So far, I can say I LOVE syntha-6. I know a lot of people don't like BSN, etc, and some are down on syntha-6, but... I think it is simply delicious. I plan on sticking with it and cycling flavors because it really helps kill my sweet tooth. Their lean dessert is ALSO delicious. Before bed, though, I drink Nitro Core Ultimate Chocolate because I was told it would feed my muscles through the night since it takes longer to digest. The flavor leaves something to be desired, but it's not totally gross. It really seems to work, because when I wake up in the morning I'm not starving!

I've looked into all the suggestions and found out they all have sucralose or some artificial sweetner. So I have to stay with muscle guage. They sweeten with stevia. Everything else gives me headaches. I wish I wasn't like that because I would go back to Myofusion..really good.

I love Optimum Nutrition's products. I take their Platinum Hydro Whey (chocolate) after a workout, although I also like their AfterMax, which is a blend of carbs/protein. And at night before bed I take their Cassein (also chocolate!), which is thicker and digests more slowly.

I like the Canadian Protein Brand simply for value. Good quality ingredients for much cheaper than most sites and is reliable. You can choose between a ton of flavors, buy in bulk and choose between many different types i.e. Isolate, concentrate, vegan, etc.
