    Running outside during the winter?

Hey everyone.. Just had a quick question. Over this past summer/fall, I began running really late at night (around 2AM) for about 3 miles every night.

I stopped once the weather got below freezing and mainly did all my cardio at the gym. I've been working really crazy hours lately, and have been kinda slacking at the gym. I really enjoyed running late night/early morning because there arent many cars and it was just kind of relaxing. I'm just wondering if its unhealthy though. I thought I remembered hearing someone say that its not good to run when its below freezing or cold. I didnt know if it was true or not, so thats why I'm asking here.

I need some input! I want to start doing it again and can deal with the cold weather if its not unhealthy to do so!

    Thanks!
    - Mike

I still do it but make sure you dress for it man, otherwise depending on how long you go out for you can get frostbite on your hands and stuff. I'll still run until around minus 20 before I resort to the treadmill haha but you gotta dress right at those temperatures for sure.

Nothing wrong with that and it will make you feel as if youve accomplished something running in the cold.
I think it would be cool to run in the freezing weather, all rugged up like rocky.

No reason not to exercise outdoors in Winter. Look at all the occupations that require being outside all day long, every day. Dress appropriately.
    No brain, no gain.

    You can't out-train bad nutrition.

Where the mind goes, the body follows.

I've found my best cardio workouts to be outdoor cardio workouts. My cardio is awful, and typically after two miles, I'm ready to quit and walk back. But jogging outdoors in freezing conditions, I can't stop jogging after two miles, because I'll freeze my ass off slowly walking back.

Jogging in 20 degree weather ensures that I will in fact be jogging there and back.

It may be beneficial to purchase something that covers your mouth/nose (they make such products for runners).
Bodybuilding is 60% training and 50% diet. Yes that adds up to 110%, because that's what you should be giving it. Change the inside, and the physique will follow.

awesome, so true! i've had more than a few runs in cold ass weather where i ran pretty slowly for the first half, turned around, and went FAST on the way home because i wanted to get out of the freakin cold! yesterday i ran about the last 5km of my run as fast as physically possible for me just because i wanted to get home and in a warm shower! i think i was running like 30 sec less per KM than usual lol!

There is nothing wrong with running outdoors in the winter.

Dress as if it's 20 degrees warmer than it actually is, a proper base layer will make all the difference in keeping you warm/dry (no cotton). Body heat is easily lost through the extremities - hat, gloves and socks are important - I usually wear a neck gaiter as well.

Account for the wind. Begin by running into it, this will prevent catching a chill on your way back. Even a slight headwind can have a real affect on your energy and speed, adjust accordingly.

It's fine. When I still practiced football (soccer) we'd run twice a week long distance. Then all our practices were outside too of course. (This is during winter).

my hands get the coldest, so gloves are a must. also, having a beard sucks in the cold, come back with snotsicles and a frozen face. i'm not a huge fan of it, but definitely do it every week or so when i want off of the treadmill.
