    Cardio: Stationary bike Vs. Treadmill

    Hi Everyone,

For Christmas my hubby and I have decided to give each other a cardio machine for our home. We are torn between a stationary bike or a treadmill. He actually prefers to use a bike and I the treadmill, I will use a bike I don't have anything against it, I just prefer the treadmill because it is my go to cardio machine.

I am looking to see what all of you think/prefer and why you prefer one over the other. Also, if you know of any good brands to look into that would help alot as well. We have no knowledge in this department so all suggestions are welcome!

    Thanks all in advance!

There's a place here that rents equipment and they also sell or rent to own. I decided to rent before I bought to make sure I'd be happy.

I rented a bike and took it back 2 months later. I didn't like it.

Got an elliptical and LOVED it, bought it.

Then I got a gym membership, sold the elliptical and almost always go to the treadmill for cardio at the gym.

    lol

I would choose the treadmill over the bike.
    DAYUM!!!

You can do more with a treadmill (particularly one that inclines) so I'd go with that to keep from getting bored. I personally really like precor, but life fitness makes good ones too. Whatever you get, TRY IT OUT before you buy it. If I was going to spend the money, I'd want a machine that doesn't feel like it's gonna break if I pound on it.

Sorry my mind stays in the gutter when I look over and see the girls in your pic. If she got some of those there would be a lot of extra cardio going on around there.

Ok sorry for the thread Jack I will sexually harass Amanda in another thread.

I prefer the treadmill. I think it uses more muscles and I can walk, jog and run on it, I even can do walking lunges! Stationary bike is a kind of a part of a chair for me: you sit and move your legs. ("big deal") If I want to use my legs I'd do step-aerobics, because again - I can use more muscles. So, I have a treadmill that we bought at a sear's outlet store (google it next to you), it is brand new but for half a price.

My husband is overweight and (of course) has a lot of health problems including pain in his back. So, three weeks ago he bought a stationary bike at craigslist. Well, it's been already almost a week since he used it last time. (It does not surprise me at all.) Ok, some more exercise for me dusting it.

So, what I'm trying to say: you should know who is going to use the equipment most of the time. And then make your choice. To find it out you could mark a calendar with a star when you did your cardio and a smile when your husband did it. (or any other marks) You'll see it right a way.

Personally, I don't feel that the bike does as much for me. And I agree with Amanda, you have more options with a treadmill.

Stationary bike is the only thing I use. I'll throw in sprints and uphill sprints when the weather is nice.

    Whatever you decide enjoy it!

Do you by any chance own a regular bike - mountain or road? Cause if you do, you can just buy a trainer to turn your conventional bike into a stationary bike. It's cheaper, and allows you to use a piece of equipment that you're already used to. My biggest gripe with the stationary bikes at the gym is that the seats kill my butt (and other areas!) but I could ride my road bike for hours.

So if it was me, I'd get a trainer and a treadmill - spend a few hundred more dollars, but then you'd have both...

I do this because I can. I can because I want to. I want to because you said I couldn't.

I run on a treadmill and watch tv sometimes... Once you get the hang of it, it's not so bad.

I only tried the stationary bike once, I quickly got bored... Plus I could peddle all day long without getting tired. (I used to BMX and Mountain Bike).

I say either treadmill or elliptical for indoors. If he is dead set on peddling or if needs it for a medical problem just get a real bike and go ride around outside, it's 100x better then a stationary bike. I would run outside but I live in the country and only have a highway in front my house haha.

The reason why I dislike the bike is I feel that it just doesn't do enough for you. It's sorta like the people who use the elliptical but lean on the arm rest to support their weight to make it easier...
