I'm sure there would be a lot of handymen and baseball players in jail...

Why would that be illegal? Those are regular, everyday items. Maybe you play baseball, or build stuff. There is absolutely no reason why you wouldn't be able to keep those in your car.

The only real source I have is when a cop was searching my car at a liqour store when I was 19 and found a mini-bat next to my seat and explained that its a wierd California thing that it was actually worse technically for him to find something like that next to my seat than a gun in the trunk.
"Technically I could take you to jail" were his exact words.
Maybe he was just being a dick and harassing me....maybe its because it was a mini-bat that has no real use....who knows.

You can always justify why you have it, just don't be a dumb ass and hide it under your seat....

pretty sure its illegal to have a bat in the car without a ball. friend got arrested once for having one in his car and the charge was like posession of a deadly weapon.

Yeah, you can have it in your car. I always kept a bat in my car when I had it (sold now). I was constantly getting pulled over for random things like tints and such, and they never harassed me about the bat when they would search the car. I know someone who used to keep a baseball in the car with their bat, incase they got harassed. Someone told them that if you have a baseball in there with the bat, the cops will have no reason to question you. Makes sence I guess. But yeah, you can keep these things in there. The police would have to prove to that you are planning on using it as a weapon, or that you haven't just picked it up from a friends house and bringing it home.
A year from now, you’ll wish you started today.

you can have a bat in your trunk, but nowhere else in the car. it cant be concealed and it cant be in plain sight. why would you need a bat IN your car?
fact.
however, i doubt a cop is really gonna do anything about it if he catches you. but he CAN, if hes a dick.

the cop doesnt decide the law.
if you go to walmart and buy a baseball bat for your nephew and act like a dumbass and put it in your passenger seat on the ride home, you deserve to be arrested.
put it in your trunk, where its legal, and where cops cannot search without a warrant or probable cause.
