what level does the squat start to become more if you have the genetics for it?-500-600-700 ext?-
I notice a lot of higher level guys who train seem to start to stagnate around 250kg squat.

I started lifting weigths when i was 18,i'm 37 now.The 100kg squat came fast,on my first year of training if i remember well. Then i got to 130kgx3 and got injured, took me a long time to start squatting again.
I don't think i will ever squat 180kilos and surprisingly, after i started learning the olympic lifts in april 2009,i'm even weaker now, probably cause i'm squatting at the end of the workout, not at the beginning.
A 115kg back squat was the most i got some months ago, probabbly i'm a bit old to see some significant changes on my strength.

I'm sure it's "possible" for probably 75% of healthy males. But I don't think its really a certain goal, most guys aren't going to hit that following a BB routine or just training legs once a week, most people are going to need an advanced PL routine and serious dedication to get there, which quite frankly most guys just don't have the time or care to do.
It took me a full year and a half to squat 375, AND thats with a belt and weightlifting shoes at that! Thats my genetic wall I guess you could say. I just have to face the facts that I'm not built to squat. And I know what its like built for a lift, it just feels good and you enjoy doing it. I could strict press 190x5 after the same amount of training at 180 lbs. Right now Im training for Oly lifting and I know for a fact that unless I dedicate some serious time to just the squat and not at the end of a workout its not going to go up very quickly if at all. Unfortunately my technique is the main problem right now.
Considering thats well over 2x BW for the average lifter. If were talking a pure PL squat well then its more attainable.

10-11-2010, 02:31 AM #189On the other hand, there are guys who do it quite easily. I have seen a number of people squat over 400lbs their first week of training. My own little brother visited me once when he was on vacation, and though he never had lifted weights, went with me to the gym and wanted to try what the guys were doing. Wearing jeans and a button down shirt, when the bar got to 275lbs, he asked me if i minded, I said no, he got under it, squatted it down, stopped and asked me if he was deep enough, I said yes,and he stood back up. About 15 minutes later he did the same with 405lbs. Might be the only two squats he has done in his life. He is about 5;10" tall and about 200lbs.Being a real lifter is not about a number, or a medal, or somebody else telling you that you are a real lifter. It is about commitment to the iron and strength of purpose.
