Would you buy this or can you recommend another product?

    http://www.lgmedsupply.com/

    Do they work?

My brother had electrodes attached to a broken bone that really worked!

    Just curious.

    Thanks in advance...

What they work for is rehabilitation,
they do help stop muscle atrophy when exercise is not possible following an operation, or injury.
They are used to help paralysed people retain muscle very successfully.

    But they aren't muscle builders.
If you appreciate what I've said, then give some rep ;)

Rehab and recovery only of course, NOT getting ripped! LOL!

I can do that on my own, but I do get some aches that could benefit from this without paying a ton of money to the therapist or chiro.

I know they use Ultrasound for plastic surgery recovery and lipos, so it must serve a purpose medically.

    Thanks for the feedback!

Yes, TENS units work, but pain is relative. They work well for aches and pains that normally subside by themself. My brother actually has a unit implanted in his back to combat acute pains from nerve damage. If you live in constant pain the pulses work well in the beginning. As time goes by the TENS unit becomes less effective. I suggest you try one out before purchasing it.

No nerve damage here, but I do get a little tendonitis in my upper forearms at times.

I just started taking Cissus and Animal Flex, but the TENS and Ultrasound is so cheap it would pay for itself in three months.

My chiropractor gave me a TENS unit which my insurance paid for.

It works great for spasmed muscles in relaxing them by fatigue. People often think of these as "pinched nerves".

As a matter of fact I just used it recently. I was racking the weight after a set of standing calf raises (done in a squat rack at home) and I missed one side and thought it was on both. I caught it, but only by wrenching my upper back and irritating a HORRIBLE pinched nerve in my neck/back area.

It was so bad that afterwards I could not turn my head more then 5deg to either direction.

I ran a few stim sessions that night and stretched out and felt 75% better within hours and did it again the next morning and felt good enough to deadlift!

They are really good at what they are good for.....rehab.....

Oh yea....and freaking people out who have never seen them. It is fun hooking the electrodes on their forearms and watching them go nuts as their fingers move uncontrollably.

EDIT: You can find them on ebay pretty cheap too!

    Buyer beware

There are different types of current used for different physiologic effect.

The current in a TENS unit is intended for pain management only, not muscle stimulation. Even if you turn the unit up higher than recommended to create spasm, you are not stimulating the muscles in a manner that will simulate training.

The Bruce Lee advertisements you are remembering are for a deeper type of current (likely Russian Stimulation or Interferential) and are now available by perscription only.

Bottom line: The TENS may be helpful for post exercise pain control. It's not medically recomended for anything besides pain control.

    This.

I work in chronic pain and that's mostly what they're used for.

The other rehab facility I work in is an MS clinic mostly neurological disorders.
We now have a unit that helps MS patients and others that have severe difficulty walking because of foot drop, we're currently doing a study now and have people come in test the unit out for a certain amount of weeks and see if they like it as well as be trained on it.

It's an electrical current just like stim, 2 stim pads are placed on the calcaneous and the unit is rapped around that every time they take a step the stim goes off lifting the front of the foot(because of where the pads are placed by the nerve) they go from having no dorsi flexion at all to having a regular dorsiflexion which of course makes it a lot easier to walk for them.
It also has an exercise mode which can be set at whatever intervals you choose, the stim simultaneously goes of bringing the foot into dorsi flexion at desired intervals, this can help with some muscle production since that muscle is unable to function.

    It's called the walk aid.

hell we have 2 tens units around the house...I have one for my back, and my wife got one when she had knee reconstruction. They do help a tiny bit with rehabilitation, and I have to admitt, sometimes when my back is super tight and spasm'ing, they do help relieve some pressure..(but I also need a disc replacement, not just normal every day pains).

I have put the tens units on my abs before around the house, what I noticed? my abs probably got more work by doing 1 set of crunches.... really not worth anything for bodybuilding...... Maybe for the hard to hit muscle groups, i.e. seratus, etc...
I do not sugar coat things, but you got in the condition you're in by "sugar coating."

If you're talking about TENS remember that effect is designed to be an anaesthetic, that's it. Not an analgesic, nor muscle stimulation. Like putting ice on a wound.
If a person is in pain and needs to break that cycle and especially doesn't want to do drugs, it can be a great way to get some fast numbing and relaxation and that's not a bad thing.

Electromagnetic stimulation on the other hand is usually used to enhance muscle performance.

It's also been excellent at helping to maintain/work muscles when active work is not possible, BUT it also has a good pedigree for enhancing strength work.

    Here's an overview (link)

It's a great passive therapy and can be a real aid in rehab and repair and recovery.
As an aid towards more active work, fabulous.

What benefits a person gets from it depends a lot on protocols used. Also positioning of electrodes (are they on motor points or not) can have a surprising impact on how effective the stimulation is or not.

The Bruce Lee advertisements you are remembering are for a deeper type of current (likely Russian Stimulation or Interferential) and are now available by perscription only.

Bottom line: The TENS may be helpful for post exercise pain control. It's not medically recomended for anything besides pain control.

^^^This. Jacking up the amplitude on the TENS unit can induce a muscle contraction, but the wave length and pulse rate are not ideal for this purpose. As others have said, these devices (and other e-stim devices) are not the secret to giant pecs or flat abs!

I found a very powerful electronic muscule stimulator on Ebay several years ago which was orginally not able to be sold in the United States because of its power. I used it to try and get some stimulation in my tricep after I lost most of it to a pinched nerve in my neck.

It felt great to have the muscle move because I had lost ALL ability to flex it after the injury. Although it never did come back I believe it did help in involunterily get the muscle to move. After using it for awhile I could actually see some life in it if I concentrated real hard on making it twitch on my own. Before I used the E-stim I had no ability to do that.

My older son and his friends were over once and started playing around with it seeing who could take more pain! It was funny to watch and it reminded me of the Jackass movie. They it placed it "down in the swimsuit area" to see who could stand it the most. They nearly hit the ceiling when the knob was turned up. Kids.

I used one after my 3rd back surgery. One time one of the pads/electrodes fell off and slide down my butt cheek while I was driving to San Fransisco. It was arcing and burning until I got the damn thing turned off. My driving was so bad, commuters must have thought I was a local.

Good post young lady. I think it is important to recognize the difference between EMS and TENS. Electrical muscle stimulation is just that, stimulating (having a physical contraction of the muscle) the muscle. The original concept of the TENS unit was to send out electrical impulses to surrounding nerves to interupt the signals between the damaged muscles (pain) and the brain so the pain would not be recognized. If you have an owie, it's not painful until your brain says it is. The science is, if you brain does not recieve the signal of pain, there is no pain. This science has been accelerated to chemistry...but I degress.. So the "TENS" unit concept worked well clinically and now we have muscle stimulaters (TENS units) used externally on the market as EMS units. Marketing equates to dollars...

    Just curious.

    Thanks in advance...
I use mine when certain injuries act up like......tennis elbow ect.....

I don't think it does much for long term (could be wrong) but it does ease the pain while using it.......

By the way, I found that the best way to get a high quality unit was to go through insurance..........

I got my chiro to order me one........it cost me $125 but would have cost me $700 if I'd bought it straight out......

    Good luck.....
