# Thread: How much alcohol does a drink thats left open overnight lose?

1. ## How much alcohol does a drink thats left open overnight lose?

Just curious, I know the alcohol starts slowly evaporating as soon as it's opened, but say a beer was 5-6 percent, and was left over afternight, how much strength would it lose? Also does the strength of the drink determine how quickly it loses strength?

Not that it'd be worth it... leftover beer=nasty, just curious.

2. did not know that

3. 3.50%

you can slow down the evaporation by keeping it cool (refrigerator), but it will still taste pretty funky

6. depends on the surface area of the liquid.

in 12 hours with a reasonable sized surface, it looks like you could expect 3.50mL to evaporate.

that's measuring isopropyl alcohol which is 99%, hardly a fair comparison to the alcohol contained in beer (in which other ingredients may also affect evaporation rate).

Did answer one of my questions though, the higher the concentration of alcohol, the higher the rate of evaporation.

8. only one way to find out. Leave 50 opened beers out the night before. The next morning, spend the day pounding them all day. See if you get drunk
