Can people list the following please.
Size of your gym and what equipment is in it.
My gym is 12'x9'.
Body solid Pro Rack with Lat Attachment, Yukon Vertical Leg Press, Body Solid Cable Crossover (plate loadable), Keys Olympic Benchpress with Leg Attachment, 2 Weight Trees, and various Dumbbells laying around in corners. It's cramped. I have to deadlift in the hall and have various equipment in other rooms.
I plan on building a small building to put everything in. I'm not quite sure how big it needs to be though.

I have a 12'x8' area. I just have a power rack, FID bench, plate tree, a stack of dumbbell plates on the floor, and various accessories. It's plenty of equipment for me, and there's still ample room to walk through it. Even if I had more space I don't think I'd buy anything more.

i've recently expanded from 08x10 to 16'x16' (although it's missing a 4'x6' chunk).
I have a phys-x power rack, fid bench, lifting platform for 8'x12' of the space, and the rest is waiting to be filled in with a ghr, and possibly a leg press...that would give me just enough extra room to have a free space for doing dumbell work, cardio, various boxing drills...i'm thinking of skipping on the leg press and having the extra space to actually move all the way around a hanging punching bag.
i would trade/sell the keys bench w/ leg attachment, and then really you could probably do fine in a 20x20 space with what you describe IMO.

My Gym is 16 X 30 and is pictured in the sticky above. If your going to build a free standing structure for a gym build it in 4' dimensions this way you will have no material waste & it will make the construction easy with little time spent cutting stock. My advice building a Gym is build it as big as you can afford as long as it compliments you home and landscape. I would also avoid any center supports. The wider the structure the more complicated the trusses but they can be as long as you want. keep in mind rubber stall mat is 4X6 for inside dimensions of your finished walls

And this ladies and gentlemen is why they call us equipment whores.....:)
I used one of those planners you talked about. This is the one I used:
http://us.home.lifefitness.com/content.cfm/roomplanner
I got the link from another thread, thanks Wildtim. I thought it worked pretty good actually. I was trying to find a way to put the rack/crossover in the place where the cardio stuff is, but I just couldn't do it right, so when I finish it out (hopefully this winter), this is pretty much going to be the layout. Of course I could change my mind!
I have about 430sf of space in that pic. Right now I'm actually using a little more (not much), but its in a completely unfinished basement. When I'm done, that's about what I'll have. Sooooo....I'm going to have to get creative with the punching bag. Everything else will actually be more organized when I'm done. No doubt, a lot of the stuff I have is unnecessary, no arguments here. But, I've got the space and I've been unconscious when it has come to acquiring stuff cheaply. I like the variety and making this a bit of a hobby has helped keep me using it. I think about it a lot so it doesn't get boring and if I get fat.....I'm going to look silly when I show my friends my uber gym!
Anyway, try one of those planners again. They work good actually and are pretty dead on as long as you do work to get the measurements right and make sure you know how to use them.
The small portion of the space is 8' x 9', the large area is 26' x 13.5' for a total of just under 430 sf:

Right now, I have a 13' x 15' space (a little less than half the garage). I have a Body Solid power rack, Body Solid FID bench, Body Solid lat pulldown, Body Solid VKR, Powertec Squat/Calf raise, Body Masters preacher curl bench, a couple weight trees and Ironmaster dumbbells. I can't fit another thing in and still have room for deads. Treadmill and elliptical are in the bedroom and I have a Tuff Stuff hack squat leg press, punching bag/speedbag w/rack and Ironmaster bench in storage until I finish the shop I'm building. The shop is 40' x 60'. 40'x30' of it is a 24'x30' shop and 16'x30' office. The remaining 40'x30' will be the gym and a bathroom with a shower. Once it's done and I get everything I currently have in it, I plan on adding just a few other things and keeping it as open as possible. We are paying for it as we go. So, building is slow. Right now, the foundation is complete (and has been for the last 2 months. We should have it dried in by Christmas.

My space is 6' x 8'. I have in it:
Smith Machine w hi/lo pulley
Parabody FID bench
Flat bench
Safety Stands
dumbbell trays for the safety stands
55deg Roman chair
Weight tree
Leg developer for the Parabody bench
Dip station for the bench
Mini-bicycle
Mini-stepper
5' bar
EZ bar
dumbbell handles
all sorts of cable attachments
pushup handles
and of course that frakkin weight vest that took forever to get here
The only thing I keep outside the space are the 50lb plates. There's just no room for those.
Everything else folds up or is small, so it fits in my tiny gym but I have to spend lots of time moving things around. Also I can't do pullups without bending my knees because the top position of the Smith bar isn't that high, that's one thing I really wish I could change, otherwise I am able to do just about every movement I want.

I've got 600 sq. ft., and could use at least 200 sq. ft. more. My gym pics are in the sticky; link is in my sig.

Mine is currently a room in the basement about 10'x10' with a Powertec WB-LS multibench, BS Hack Squat/Leg Press, Sole F80 treadmill, a bunch of dumbbells and plates scattered everywhere. It's a little cramped, so I'm currently blowing out a wall to add the space from the adjacent family room that never gets used. Once it's all nicely re-finished, it'll be more like 10'x25'! Much more room then to add the Roman Chair I just picked up and an adjustable bench to use with the dumbbells. Then looking to add a VKR/dip station.
