Just want to see some opinions, examples, stories, etc. I like being 165, and my deadlift should be over 500 by Nov/Dec. That'd would let me be competitive raw dead-lifter at national level in some less prestigious federations.
How tall are average 165 lifters?

It's interesting to see how that chart differs from the standard BMI chart. Assuming no steroid use, a 6' 275 lber would be hell of a lot fatter than someone who is 5'4", 165 lb, yet they have to be that way to put up their highest numbers relative to their bodyweight?
Ignoring the wilks and going purely by weight, could a 6'1" be reasonably competitive in 242 or even 220 or would he be blown away by the 5'9"s?I will become stronger than any natural woman before me.

people here tend to bag on louie simmons, but paraphrasing what he's said regarding optimal weight classes is that you should keep gaining weight until your deadlift starts to go down due to your leverages, then drop to the weight class directly below that.
so if you gain weight and all your lifts keep moving up until you hit say...235lbs. then you should compete at 220.
if you only get to 205lbs and your deadlift stalls due to leverages...well then compete as a 198ers.

Height isn't a limiting factor on deadlift like it is on the other lifts as much. A tall lankyish lifter can be a good deadlifter.
The best raw 165 deadlift I've seen was a 19 year old hit 595 and he was 5'8.
But in general if you're 5'8 you should at least be @ 198 before your leverages start to get the best of you.
As I've gained weight I've managed to stay almost at the same % bodyweight deadlift so you'd obviously be more competitive the heavier you get as the same % bodyweight yields a higher wilks at heavier weights. (3.5X at 181, 3.35X at 200, and I plan on getting to about 3.3X at 215)Team Super Awesome!
There is no such thing as 'strong enough'

The number one raw deadlifter at 165 in the US is Eric Talmant. He pulled 630 and is 5' 8". The deadlift isnt exactly like the other lifts when adding weight. Adding too much weight can hinder your deadlift. Not saying you shouldnt get bigger but finding the right weight class should be everyone's goal. However, it is possible to be a good deadlifter at 5' 8" and 165.
