    Bench Press with Chains

    Hi all,

I was curious about why people would use chains on the bar when doing Bench?

Sorry if it's a sill question! I've been lifting for about 12 years and have never thought to ask before.

    Thanks

The purpose of chains is to build explosive power in the bench as the weight increases throughout the movement untill lockout...Chains can also help you break through sticking points (or bands, they do pretty much the same thing).
Strength is more useful than weakness.

    FALSE!!

Chains are used to overload a certain point of a lift and build explosive strength through that part of the lift. Usually this is a couple inches off the chest or 3-4 inches before lockout.

Bands use what are called over-speed eccentrics. The bands are pulling the bar down towards your chest, thus making the eccentric part of the lift faster. In theory, the faster the eccentric part of the lift then the faster the muscle can contract, thus creating more power.

Both bands and chains help to stop bar deceleration. Using straight weight, no matter what you do, you will never push all the way through the lift. Using bands and chains forces you to keep pushing almost all the way through lockout.
