Hi
I'm 30 yo. weighing 200lbs, 6'0 tall..not built but athletic looking..i play alot of football..not american football, but the Irish version called gaelic football..kinda like aussie rules. Lifting during the off season november to march for last 4 years. I can only do about 12 full pull ups, decreasing to bout 9, 7 , 5 in remaining sets. I have been stuck on this for last year. I can manage a couple more on each set of chinups.
Is this average? How many can you do?
Any tips how i can improve..like to be able do 20 in first rep!
Thanks
Tee

20 minimum, I'm not sure though I always add weight or do 1 arm chins.
Try pyramids, do 1 rest 30 secs, 2 rest, 3 rest up to Im guessing 8 or so for you and work back down.
Grease the groove works good too. Every hour or 2 do a set of 9 or 10. After 2-4 weeks you'll probably be at around 15-18.
Also u should do more variations, theres tonnes. Towel pullups are awesome, I found it worked best with 1 towel, pull up with your arms in front of you then try to pull your arms apart at the top.PERSONAL BESTS
1.5 Miles (7:58)
100 Burpees (5:35)
1x 1 arm chinup with either arm
3x 1 arm divebomber pushups
3x Triple clap pushups (consecutive)
375lb Deadlift

Your only overtraining if your always tired & grumpy, your poundages go down, you lose muscle in spite of training & diet.

Well from reading your posts and looking at your stats, the trend appears to be the taller, heavier guys like me (6'0 200lbs) are only getting around 8-12. Probably to do with lifting a heavier weight a longer distance due longer arms. Is my conclusion correct or am i just trying to console myself?!!
I do them slowly with no swinging and fully up to fully down.

Well..i was just basing my conclusions on the stats of the previous posters..i'm not saying that is the sole reason why i'm having difficulty in passing 12 reps.
The guy in your first video is all over the place..look at his legs..flailing around like a rope in the wind. He is using momentum and his whole body to get up not just his arms. Plus he is not going fully down or fully up..his eyes barely meet the bar.
The second guy is much more impressive but he only does 5 at a time..granted with big weighted chains..he is very strong no doubt but he may no endurance and may be only able to do 12-15 reps max per set. I dont know..do you?
So i'm sorry but they prove nothing!

Use pullups as an assistance exercise with 3 sets of max reps, or 5x5 starting from bodyweight and working up with added weight.
To see a tall heavy guy doing a decent amount of pullups go to defrancostraining.com click on the YouTube link and search through his upper body videos for "Timmy Toothpick" who is doing weighted pullups

first guy does use a bit leg, but it's not that much, and its 50 pullups. show me a vid of 50 strict pullups
second guy did 30 or 35 reps total, why do you think he can only do 12-15 max per set? all what he did was one set, and he did 30 or 35 which 15 or 20 were weighted, you don't make any sense...

if you say you're having trouble getting over 12 pullups doing them slowly, then try speeding it up. try going as fast as you can but without losing form/control.

i do around 4 or 5 but i can get it up2 around 10 with a few weeks of doing them.
what i like to do is pick a number and just do that amount of pull ups till i get there e.g
20pulls up i would so sumit like 8,4,2,1,1,1,1,1,1 then the next time id try sumit like 9,5,3,3 unitl i get to 20 total pull ups, right now im aiming for 15.people ask me how to train, and i answer "i look at what you do and then i do the exact oposite"
if your family was captured and you were told you needed to put 100 pounds onto your max squat within two months or your family would be executed, would you squat once per week? Something tells me that you'd start squatting every day

I can do 25-30 in a first set (maybe more but never really tried).
As far as tips for improving your pullups.. just keep doing them! Also change your grip (do wide grip, etc) and maybe do lower reps with 5-10lbs hanging on your waist or at your feet.Workout Journal: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?p=214472381
