i just left the iron gym up in the door frame, and several times a day, i try to crank out either 5 chin ups or pull ups. is there anything negative to doing this?

what happens if you do pull ups each day?
4/14/08 - 240/28% - screw you, pizza!
6/17/09 - 224/? - not much progress from 14 months but had about a year break
7/05/09 - 220/24.5% - pull-ups + running + sit-ups = good.
8/05/09 - 213.5/23% - starting to enjoy running
10/08/09 - 200/21% - I am now a runner!
7/10/09 - 9:37 mile. A new record for me.
7/21/09 - 9:34 a week ago, but now hitting 10:08.
8/05/09 - 9:22 mile, 22:00 2 miles, 36:30 3 miles
10/08/09 - I ran 8 miles straight outside the other day!

Depends what you define as results. He will obtain a certain level of upper back and arm strength/size that will plateau over time. Increase endurance. Gymnast do this daily and their upper body development is decent.
As a body builder, he will "incrementally" need to add more resistance and then rest to make further gains.

My bad, i didnt mean No results. I meant minimal results. I'd bet you might get pretty good at them and be able to do quite a few after awhile, but really if your looking for results just hit the gym man. I'd be surprised if you saw any real result from the mirror doing this though. just my opinion.

Its a good purchase if you use it right.
if you have not been doing pull ups or chins than you will see results until your body weight gets easy to pull up. I did pull ups and chins for about a year with just my body weight and my lats grew quit a bit, but in time you will want to add weight.
Even if you have been doing them just go out and buy a chain belt and some plates and your good to go.
Be careful not to rip the door frame out of your house i have seen it done and its not like you weigh 150lbs, and its just wood. good luck.

That's nonsense. Doing chinups and pullups can give you some very nice back development. You can satisfy the requirement of progressive overload by doing more and more of them, decreasing rest periods, as well as doing weighted pullups.
Also the OP, didn't say that this was ALL he was doing.☠ By reading this post, you have agreed to my negative reputation terms of service.

I guess i need to clarify my statement. What I meant is it sounds like a really lazy non committed approach for a workout. No there is nothing wrong with it, but from the outside looking in to me it just sounds like a 12 year old doing curls with his 10lb dumbbells 100 reps and doing 1000 crunches a night. That's all. Done correctly chin ups and pull ups can do great things for development. As for not knowing whether that was all he was doing, my bad I guess i didn't stop to think about that.

exactly
If you can only do 5 reps, then yeah doing 5 reps every day is good and will allow you to gradually do more reps instead of doing 3 sets in one day where you do 5 the first set and then are fatigued and only end up getting 2 reps on the next sets. Eventually (like when you're able to get 12 reps in one set or so) you can try adding them into your actual back workout and stop doing them every day.

You should get a bigger and better back doing this.
Back muscles respond to volume and as the reps pile up day after day the mass on your back should pile up too. You could take pics and see for yourself. Best wishes, Bo

OP on a different note i read your other thread and it looks like you are interested in cutting down fat too. doing pull ups that many times a day should help. not to mention when you do decide to start hitting the gym you will have a good base to start from. just my opinion though
You would be surprised just how much time I have to waste.

Related question: I would do this too with the iron gym, everytime i entered my room I would do a couple n' all. I strained my shoulders recently & i'm wondering if it's possible that it was from doing too widegrip pullups on a rest day? the strain is on the front lat, think it's where it connects to the pec. I'm not sure if it was a big part of the cause or not but im going to be more cautious about doing that =/
