yeah, that real 'go getter' attitude that he's showing really points to that.

As for not starting because I don't want to get huge, in my personal opinion it looks completely stupid to have too much muscle. I am happy with a toned look.

And the reason I ask, is if I stop in 10 years and become a blob because I weight trained for 10 years, then obviously I wont bother starting.
Well this is the 1st problem...thinking you're going to get huge...yeah if only it were that easy...

Turning into a blob has to do with your diet...not your training...

As far as for thinking about stopping........... don't do it.

I know where you're coming from, because injuries prevented me from training for many years. Finally, I was able to get all the tires retreaded and I'm out for another go around.

Just noticed that it's been almost (end of June) two years since I began my return to lifting........ am I back to what I was, no......... but I'm a heck of alot better than I was two years ago. Shooting to finish the transformation by Dec 31st.

Despite what some claim. Everyone stops at one point or another. They may pick back up but most do stop for whatever reasons.

I worked out for a while then stopped. I noticed that my "pump" was gone. My shape was gone. I have had a gut mostly since I got past 25 so I dont count it..lol

You lose confidence. You feel worse. Once workingout is in your blood....YOU actually HATE not workingout. You feel guilty.

I have been training since about 26-27yrold and went off and on a lot. I got strong as heck and beefy but gave up a couple years here and there..NOW in early 07 I started back and havent quit yet. I might not go as heavy as I did, but I keep going.

    LMFAO!!!!

Dude muscle can't turn to fat period. If you train and you get a really decent build and then you stop, you will just go back to where you started but you will always have that "build" advantage that people who don't train don't have.

OK, let's say that in 10 years, your life will change significantly - maybe marriage and a couple kids. Even so, you can still do pushups, buy a couple of adjustable DBs and a bench (or an exercise ball) and do DB presses, etc. So even if you can't get to a gym, you can still train.

Op..Perhaps you could cycle you're workout program.

Weight train for a month and see how it goes..See how you feel about the difference achieved in you're strength and physique. If you start getting scared because you're starting to get too big and strong, simply back off from the weights and utilize and emphasize more cardio activities like bicycling and/or running.

Get into athletic based workouts as well.Focus on Explosiveness and flexibility. Plyometrics,Boxing, and Martial Arts are good solid choices for overall fitness.
Swimming is another great all around exercise for good all around balance of physical competence.

Bodyweight exercises are another solid staple in overall fitness competence.
Incorporate Pushups,Pullups, and plenty of ab work to a substaintial degree over hardcore resistance training..Add in calesthetics and you are fit, solid,in shape,Full of core physical ability competence and in no worry of getting too big !

Try switching back and forth from month to month, balance the two approaches,or decide for yourself what to mainly do more of in terms of personal preference based workout program structures.

Write down innovative programs that will help keep you motivated.Log down you're workouts and such.Keep a personal workout Log like Bruce Lee used to do. ; )
For example,Lee never wanted to become a bodybuilder per say,but was a physical fitness fanatic who varied his workouts constantly all the time and completely avoided physical platues. This seems like the ideal approach for someone who for whatever reason does not want to ever get muscles that are too big.Focus in favor of overall physical body functionality over blatant drastic muscle size increases.

    Just my $ 0.2
    Good Luck !

Heh...it's not supposed to protect your mouth. I have no idea why it's called that. It's supposed to keep your jaw from slamming against your upper teeth ridge to prevent your brain from bouncing off the inside of your skull.

It should be called brain protector.

I have to say it's pretty foolish to be worried about what you're going to look like in 10 or 20 years if you work out. You'll certainly be better off than if you do nothing.

You should be worried about what you'll look like if you don't.

In the unlikely event that you rapidly find yourself being mistaken for Arnold circa 1975, you can always tone things down a bit.

Did I just use the word "tone"? *gag*

I think that every older guy here will agree, the older you get the more important it is the work out and take care of yourself. I think that at your age you are assuming you will always be healthy. Without working out, that simply will not be the case and this becomes more obvious the older you get. Excercise is key, it's not just for picking up the ladies.

You simply will not be huge without a huge amount of work and dedication. I wouldn't waste time thinking about how huge you will get, simply going to the gym and lifting weights will not yield that kind of result, I wish it did . The people here that are big/cut and look like champions train like champions, it's very hard work.

    Exactly!

It's called "muscle memory" and thank God for it! Even after a brief layoff I can recover size and strength sometimes in as little as 3-4 weeks.

And you gotta love people that say "I want to train but I really don't want to get too big........LMFAO!!!! It's like saying that you want to learn to play the piano but don't want to become a Mozart. It AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN! It takes a helluva lot of work, dedication, determination, and your genetics will ultimately decide how big you will get (outside of steroids and GH of course).

So, you either do it now or don't. As for me, I'm not stopping until my arms fall off!

So you're already toned, huh? That's good; there's nuthin' better than being toned up. And, obviously, you are concerned about getting too huge. Believe me, we all are very careful about not allowing that to happen! Oh yeah, and your pretty sure that after 10 years or so of dedicated, consistent training, you're going to probably not be able to continue lifting because of other stuff going on in your life....Hmmm.

Well, for what it's worth, I'd suggest you avoid the whole "lifting" thing altogether. Why wait until you're in your 30's to fill your life with more worthwhile activities? Start filling it right now! You cannot count on life lasting 10 more years or 10 more seconds. Get busy living! That way, you don't have to worry about what to do with all your big muscles now that you don't have time to get to train anymore.

    Go get 'em!

No, wait...listen kid, I was fkn with ya. Wanna know why? Because you are actually too fkn clueless to even know how foolish you sound. That's not meant to be a knock on you; it's a fact. Go to a good lifters gym. Stay out of people's way. Get some workouts in and watch some of the dedicated types practice their craft. Don't stare, just watch. Continue working out. If you like it, pick up Arnold's Encyclopedia od Bodybuilding from the library. Look it over. If the stuff in ther and the stuff at the gym starts to take over your mind...like in a big way...continue on the path. Maybe talk to a couple of the guys who obviously know what they're doing. Come to this site; come to this forum. Do more reading than talking, alot more reading than talking.

Eventually, after a couple years or so, you'll at least know what questions you should be asking. Good luck.

    Thanks

Don't take supplements when you work out. If you do, and then stop working out, you will look like this...

Working out is dangerous stuff. So many ways it can make you look worse. If you work out more than once a week, this usually happens...

A: yes definately but at what rate is the question. Will you be consuming a high protein diet then or a mostly carb and sugar rich diet.Lets not forget sodium and family stress.
Keeping gains requires time and some kind of sports activity even if it is not weight training. Will you become a 5k runner or a couch potato. Answer where you will be in 10 years and i will serve up your answer on a silver platter.

Something very similar happened to me. I worked out for about 6 weeks and everything was going along just fine. One night, after a workout, I had some of dat dere cell tech. The next morning, bam, I looked just like this guy.

It took me nearly a year to get back to normal.

What happens when you stop training? You end up living in a van down by the river.

Seriously though, you will not be worse off for having trained early in your life ... even if you decide to stop later.
