I started getting motivated after really receiving an ego blow from the wife (long story) and decided that I needed to get in shape. For about 6 weeks I started doing pushups and light DB workouts at home to see if I would stick with it and justify a gym membership. I did!
Decided to join a gym and work with a trainer there to make sure I do things right.
Had my first session 2 days ago and I wake up yesterday with horrible horrible pain in the area between my Bicep and Forearm. 2 days now and it's really painful when I straighten my arm out.
The workout consisted of Chest/Tricep/Bicep. I'm confident that the pain is a direct result of the curls I was doing. The trainer had me working to muscle exhaustion each set - (between 8-10 reps) , and I honestly feel like the weight was a bit high for me. This isn't the first time I've felt this particular pain (it seems to involve doing curls in the past).
Have I torn or damaged something or is this normal?
Should my trainer have started me off slower or is this expected for the first week?
Muscle soreness I can deal with but this stinks.

OK now for your answer. Its probably just some serious soreness since you are just starting out. I have had that feeling in the past where i cant extend my arm, it sucks. Try icing it or doing some hot/cold contrast stuff if its really to much. But yeah it should go away soon and next time wont hurt nearly as much as your body gets used to it.

I think he means the inside of his elbow and its not the joint.
I know exactly what your talking about if thats it. You did fine weight though if you were running out of steam at 10 reps then you aren't doing to much weight. There are a lot of ignorant trainers out there but give yours the benefit of the doubt. Stick with it and soon enough the soreness wont be as bad. If I even take over two weeks off I have the same feeling.
Good luck with your workoutsI will get you back.

Yeah, you getting that feeling like your arm doesn't want to straighten at all, and you actually have to physically force it through the pain to get it all the way straight?
What you probably have is extreme beginner soreness. I got it really bad, to where I needed help putting on a shirt, the first time I started lifting in a gym. The good news is it will go away. The same feeling will come back every time you work out your biceps for a while, but it will never be nearly as intense as the first time.
Unless it doesn't go away. You said it's been 2 days, if it doesn't get noticeably better within the next two days, or if it isn't completely better within the next 4 or 5 days, you'll need to see a doctor. You could have actually pulled the muscle, or it could just be that good old extreme newbie soreness.

It could be soreness in your brachialis. Or it could be something in the very medial forearm. Were you doing hammer curls or reverse curls by chance?
Also, I believe he's referring to "elbow" as the bony point on the posterior of the arm where you would hit your funny bone. The elbow is the entire joint, not just that part.Last edited by wolfbaden6; 06-04-2009 at 04:39 PM.

OP,
I currently [may] have the same problem.
It's a sharp pain, definitely in the joint/tendon area, correct?
Not sure for your case, but I went to my MD and he said it was inflamed.
Therefore, I has the tendonitis
I recommend icing it, aspirin, rest.
That's all you can really do :/
If that's not the problem, than good luck with whatever you have

it's beginner soreness. usually the first time you do a workout at the gym, even after taking a break, let alone the first time ever, you only do a couple sets and not to failure. if you told yur trainer it was your first workout then he is a dumbass. he should of pretty much walked you through every exercise with weights that border line on embarrassing just to get form down and get yur pathetic newb body used to the movements. kidding about the pathetic newb comment, couldnt help myself.
it'll probably go away after about 4-5 days. probably worse after 48 hours. stick with it bro. pretty soon you'll be monkey pressing that wife into submission!

I am dredging up this thread on purpose.. In case you're like me and this wasn't just a one time or few week problem.. this is called tendinitis of the distal bicep. the tendon that connects to the small bone of the forearm. It is caused by a sudden increase in activity of this area of the arm. If not watched closely it can persist into something worse, I get it EVERY time I do have arm work out, especially one that includes controlled negatives. Use aspirin, sports rubs, and ice to control it the best of your ability and just be ready to walk around with "T-rex arms" for a few days.... GOOD LUCK

youre trainer overdid ou on it and you let him.
did you not tell him it was your first time ?
as far as the pain if it hurts dont do it. try some fricton massage, myofasical release, trigger point therapy.Disclaimer: The above post is my personal opinion and does not represent the official position of any company or entity. It does not constitute medical advice.
