Today in the gym, an old guy started asking me questions about what supplements I take. After we got into all that, he told me that the body can only handle up to 30 grams of protein at one time. Lately, I have been taking 2 25 gram servings of protein post workout. I want to know if I am wasting almost all of the second serving or is this guy wrong?

I'm pretty sure that it is a myth that your body can handle only a certain amount of protein at a time.....the body is designed for maximal absorption. I can see this being true if you ate 150 grams of protein at once, but 50 grams in one sitting is fine.

This issue of men's health says I believe its 25 grams. Basically it says your body will get a ton of use out of that 25 grams and anything after that will not be wasted but also not really be much help either. I dont have the issue at hand but I remember for a fact that I read this yesterday. It was somewhere between 20-25 grams.
So basically to answer the question. If you go by that information, your body can handle more but its really unnecessary to take more than 25 grams or so. Kind of like when people are on test boosters and they ask "I'm taking 2 pills in the morning and 2 with dinner, if I take 2 in the morning, 2 with lunch and 2 with dinner will I see better results". Most people's answer is, "you might see slightly better results but not enough to make it worth wasting 2 extra pills a day, you would be better off just making it an 8 week cycle instead of 6 weeks."Last edited by Hockey84; 06-02-2009 at 06:49 PM.

and to me eating 150g protein in one sitting is just insane. eating your 5-6 meals a day, with assorted nuts as snacks, and taking easily digested whey proteins throughout the day is suffice. on a related note, casein helps to store and slow release amino acids, kind of as an infinite source of nitrogeni do it for the tacos.

It's funny that you brought up casein because I just started researching it about an hour ago. I'm finding it difficult to get the amount of protein I need each day. I learned that casein is slow digesting and fights catabolic states. I'm interested in taking Syntrax Matrix. Has anyone tried this yet?

Even in nutrition classes there was never a real answer.
alot of broscience saying exact amount without scientific data.
theres one definate though, if you consume more protein than your body can handle, you piss it out.
0.8-1 g of protein per body weight is what the recommended amount was a few years back, then it was 1-1.5 ... now its 1-2 ...
if you keep to 1g/lb break up your food into 5-6 meals.
this will ensure you get a lower dosage of protein in each meal,
so you will absorb the maximum amount (regardless of what it maybe)
