im a little confused on what percentage of my max to use on individual sets... say im doing 3x8? 5x5? is it a good idea to lift to failure on my last set?

Lifting to new extremes!
Its not good to lift to failure unless its your last chest exercise. That way you can get the best benefits from each chest exercise instead of just middle of the pecs. For a good developed chest, you need to do incline aswell, and DB flys.
