Ask a traditional wetshaver anything (serious)

Yeah I build lather with a badger hair brush and use english shaving creams paired with razors older than my father. Any others?

    1. it started because i found it an interesting hobby. but i continued with it because it gives me a much, much better shave than any current shaving system of today (including mach 3, fusion etc) the creams are much more moisturizing and soften the hair on my face to the point where anything more than one blade is overkill. it gives me a much closer shave and i get NO irritation. i used to always get razor burn on my jawline with my fusion.

that answers 2 as well. it's much more efficient, cheaper and actually makes shaving an enjoyable task rather than a chore.

although i don't use a straight razor (i use a DE blade) i know a bit about them. they're a bit of a hassle to maintain because you have to strop before and after every shave and send it in to be honed every two months or even less sometimes. look for Dovo for a good but decently priced straight razor. places like straightrazordesigns.com have good prices and you can even get your razor with a strop as a package deal

    What blades do you like?

I'm trying to finish off a bunch of derby's because my beard is just too coarse. I need feathers to get a really comfortable shave without any tugging.

Been using a lot of TOBS rose and avocado lately as well as a vintage blades soap (which is allegedly the same as T&H luxury soap)

    Lord platinums.

I've only used 4 different blades, but these are my top. I shave every day or every other day, and they keep me smooth. Definitely a sharp blade, and $1.50 for 5.

    I buy in bulk.

awesome stuff. what brush and razor do you use? you should get better blades than that.

this was my set up a while ago, it's grown by 4 razors and a tub of trumpers now though.

and a Merkur HD which isn't pictured.

My all time favorite blades are the Gillette swedes, but they're discontinued now. Now I use the Crystals (israeli personna) and Personna Red packs. but I occasionally use feathers, bics and others.

Feathers are great but in my HD it's too aggressive. I hate derbys. not nearly sharp enough for me.

Nice stuff Advil. Merkur silvertip badger and a merkur classic 1904.

I like my Lords! I don't have a thick beard by any means, and they are sharp, last 2-3 shaves, and never snag. I even use this razor and the same (albeit a fresh) blade to shave my pitts/groin region. I trust the Lords and my technique.

I switched from Musgo (which was really nice before I bought a brush about a year ago) to Proraso. I can whip up a mean foam with about anything, but the Proraso doesn't lead to me breaking out.

Proraso is good stuff. It was my first cream. And if you like your Lords, then stick with em. But it doesn't hurt to experiment with other brands!

Try getting some Van Der Hagen glycerin soap and make superlather with that and your proraso. It's one of my favorite combos!

I find myself always going back to proraso and the proraso pre shave balm. It's such a soothing shave. I've got a few razors but my go to razor is my classic Merkur 38c. I have an HD and a Futur as well. My blades of choice are feathers or Israeli Personnas. I also have a very nice silver tip badger brush. My after shave balm of choice is the Gentlemans Refinery unscented balm.

I've only used 4 different blades, but these are my top. I shave every day or every other day, and they keep me smooth. Definitely a sharp blade, and $1.50 for 5.

    I buy in bulk.
Yeah I bought the derby blades in bulk as a 100ct. pack because I liked them initially but now i'm just not much of a fan so I change them often.

I rock an HD as well and I know what you mean because if I ever try to go against the grain the feather will bite me a bit. Luckily I get close enough for my taste by going with and across though so it's not a big deal.

I may check out some lord's and swedes if I can find a 5 pack or something before buying a bunch of feathers.

x2 on the superlather with proraso, I use vdh deluxe (like a buck at wal-mart) and it's a great combo

My after shave balm of choice is the Gentlemans Refinery unscented balm.
I use the proraso balm too. Try using it as an aftershave instead (or both), it's extremely effective. I almost got a 38c but got a vintage gillette addiction. my next razor will be a merkur slant bar though.

if you like proraso, go to Bath and Body Works in your local mall and in the mens section they have C.O Bigelow cream. It's made by proraso and is pretty much the exact same thing but locally available.

No they're just old-fashioned but are still made. My razors however range from being made in the 1920's to the 1960's and I have one that was made recently.

Wet shaving is the ONLY way to shave IMO.

No razor burn, close shave, healthier skin.

Badger hair brush, Proraso, quality safety razor.

and much cheaper if you don't get into the collecting aspect of it.

for example: 100 red pack personna blades for $10 - last 4-5 shaves
vs 4 fusion blades for $15 and last the same amount of shaves.

nah dude, shavettes are nothing like real straights. just get a DE and use that until you can get a real straight.

Very true, initial start up is a little more but you save in the long run, especially since the razor and brush will last a lifetime.

i've had a barber use both, i prefer the feel of the straight replaceable ones.
I've got a DE. Hard to get around stash and goatee with. The shavettes are more nimble.

*edit*i've also considered picking up a mediocre real straight, and using on special occasions like dates and weddings, extending the life of it.
