Did I do good misc?
On clearance but not previously owned
BC Rich JR V deluxe
Neck-through body contrsuction, ebony fingerboard, double EMG active pickups, pear inlays in fingerboard and edging on body and head, with floyd rose
$379.
Valued at $750-900
I tried out some stuff, top choices were this, used Jackson Kelly and Schecter Solo. This took the cake cause it had everything I wanted at under my price limit. The only thing that could have been better would be a 7 string but cheapest I found that was any good was a used Schecter at $500.-Crohn's Disease crew

Epi's are really great. Of course they are no les Paul. But for the money you can't beat them.
I got lucky to find this one. It was made in 1999 and is mint condition. If you can find a late 90's model made in Korea. Get it. I would pay upwards of $500 for an epi like this one.
Blues, country and rock sound amazing when played on this hollow body. There is no they…

So I know some of you guys were curious how heavy the Mesa Royal Atlantic could get. Well I just did a quick recording on the new LP I got with the EMG's through the Mesa. Extremely rough clip... Excuse my sloppiness. Just the camera mic picking up the amp. Gain is only on 1 o clock

Could anyone recommend a good electric guitar to begin with? Ive been playing acoustic now for about a year and a half and I would like to buy an electric. What sort of prices would I be looking at for a decent guitar and amp? Thanks.

Basic recommendations:
Start with a modelling amp unless you're 100% sure and committed to one sound/ style and ready to spend the money to get that sound.
Find out which type of pickups you want (humbucking, single coil, active/passive)
Get a tune-o-matic bridge to start. Avoid floyd rose on your first guitar IMO, it's such a huge pain in the ass to have to set up your entire floyd every time you change tuning.
Then just go play some **** at GC and see what feels right. Find one that feels right then try some different amps.
I have a 15 watt Line 6 Spider 3 I think it's a good starting amp, it doesn't sound the best but it will do a little of everything okay.
-
Speaking of which, I want to refine my sound/ tone. I want a hotter, crunchier metal tone. Will pedals go a long way with a Spider III or should I look at upgrading?
I don't want anything big or powerful, I play indoors, I don't gig. I've heard tube amps only sound good at higher volumes when the tubes are heated up?-Crohn's Disease crew

The problem with pedal in front of solid state gain channels is that they will muddy them up.
Pedals in front of gain channels should to be pushing preamp tubes to make a difference.
So, either upgrade the amp, or run clean and get a pedal with the sound you want.
Try a digitech DF7 distortion factory, has tube screamer, metal zone, ratt, etc.. models, and they're cheap used. the Joyo Extreme Metal distortion is also a full on metal monster with boost, cheap.
An easy way, is to have a 'good' gain tone, then run an EQ through the effects loop (which you don't have) and scoop it, makes a world of difference.
I have had numerous tube amps that sounded great at low volumes, but don't expect a 120 watt head to rip it at bedroom levels. look at a 5-50 watt amp.
you want metal, try the Laney Ironheart studio (15 W with a 1 W input), the new Blackstar HT metal series (they have 1 watt and 5 watt options, 5 watt has a loop). The new marshall DSL 15C and 40C will rip your head off and both have a loop. The Jet City 20 watt 2 channel is a shredder too. It's a combo you can get cheap if you hunt, it's got the SLO OD circuit in the OD channel.
But the problem you have with the Spider is the lack of adequate EQ options (you get what you pay for)
I'd try a pedal first, like I said, my DF 7 rips, I use it and the T-rex Hobo (not a metal pedal),The amps I use, My Laney IRT15 and the Laney TT50 coming, all have good 'metal tones' but REALLY rip with an EQ in the loop. I only use boost in the front to push the tubes for sustain.
Try Guitar center used gear for the Marshalls, a bunch of DSL 15's in there, listen to "guitar world" demos, regardless of the haters, Paul does show what these can do. Also look for the Jet city stuff there, even their 50 watt sounds good low. But get a Joyo, Danelectro, etc.. 6-7 band EQ ($30)
But for you, the 5-15 watt amps I've listed will do everything you want. I left off stuff like the dark terror, because it's single channel.
But, here's an example, $250 at GC used, Regular Blackstar HT5 C (12 inch) in Charlotte, pick up a decent OD and boost the signal, then run an EQ through the loop, $350 and you've got a serious metal rig that will clean up, can do blues, classic rock and metal, and is 'pretty damn loud' if you want it.
Jet City 2212 ($350) with an EQ($30) - classic rock to metal, with 'okay' clean add a $30 'od' pedal to the clean channel for a little crunch and it's now a 3 channel amp.
The DSL 15's start around $350 too
GC used, $12.50 shipping on amps and you pay tax, but if it's bad, you take it back to the local store for a full refund, if you just 'don't like it' they refund all but the shipping. Always good to CALL the store and confirm condition and if it has the footswitch DO NOT ASSUME IT DOES.Last edited by ctgblue; 10-16-2013 at 05:57 AM.

The VHT had to go back home, so I currently have my Laney IRT 15 Studio and this Laney TT50 head.
If you don't know the TT50, it's worth looking up. They're just NICE amps, lots of smooth gain, not real nasty, but lots of gain.
3 channels, dual master volumes, loads of sound shaping, individual channel reverb levels, FX mix, damping switch, and the list goes on.

I gigged years ago, I just swap stuff back and forth now, the money in the 'studio room' gets to stay there, so as long as I'm not in the bank account, I can trade and swap whatever
I just can't really afford the gear I'd stick with. (Thunderverb 50, Powerball 2, etc..) I'll have the two Laneys, the Marshall, and the 212 cab for less than a Thunderverb head costs
I've also got a used Marshall DSL40C coming, has a bright cap mod and some DYI mods to the cab, so it was really cheap.
Going to sell my 412 cab, run the two heads through the 212 stereo cab, build a 'storage cab' that looks like a 412 and put all my music stuff in it and use it to hold the 212 and the two heads, like the 412 does now.
actually, I just grabbed two 112 cabs, so I'll put those IN the storage box and ditch the 412 and the 212Last edited by ctgblue; 10-18-2013 at 11:31 AM.

Alright I think I'm getting it, thanks and reped. If I ran an EQ through my Spider III should I turn all my tone nobs to the same spot (10/10/10, 5/5/5 etc.) so they're equal then do all the EQ through the pedal for consistency?
Also is there anything I need to know about choosing a wah paddle or just try some out at GC? Been wanting to get one for when I play some of my favorite songs that use it.-Crohn's Disease crew

So I picked up a Single Rec on ebay. It sounded awesome...until I tried to use the FX Loop. My delay and chorus pedals were causing it to clip because the rectifiers have that stupid parallel effects loop. So now I have to decide if I want to take it in to an amp tech and have it converted to a series loop or if I should just sell it and pick up a 5153 50 watt or 6505+. It does deliver some sweet tones...
