Scientists have found a material that's so perfect, it's 10 billion times stronger than steel. The bad news is, it only exists on the surface of neutron stars for now.
If it can be made on earth the possibilities are mind boggling: skyscrapers that are miles high, space elevators, bird shot that rips through the heaviest terrorist armor, safer cars,...

I may never win the war against gravity, but every week I win a battle by raising a few more pounds than the week before.

epic bumper cars.
People ask why I train so much and eat like I do all the time... Well, the answer is simple:
I will not allow somebody with half the determination and twice the genetics be better than me.

It probably has a melting point of 100,000,000 degrees and would be ridiculously heavy and radioactive. It wouldn't be used for anything on Earth, but maybe as part of a solar panel to catch energy from large stars...who knows

This substance on the surface of a neutron star is a perfect crystal; more perfect than anything that can be made on Earth. It wouldnt be a billion times heavier than steel but it would be alot heavier (10-100 times?).
Most of that Neutron star mass is coming from the core mass of the star. The core mass is composed of tightly packed neutrons (the gravity is so intense that it has fused all the atoms together into a pack of atomic nuclei without all the space that atoms usually have between them) which are alot heavier and alot stronger (in terms of strength per area not mass).
Hi Jamie. A neutron star weighs a few times that of our Sun. Two solar masses is about 2/3 of a MILLION Earth masses. And all of it would be packed into a ball only about 30km or so across.
To a neutron star, the Earth is almost like just another cloud of gas about 12,800 km acoross. It wouldn't punch through the Earth - the Earth would fall in its tremendous gravitational gradient and be destroyed by it. And as it fell toward it, the Earth would be tidally disrupted end up thourougly vaporized, turned into a hot gas of plasma that furiously drains onto the neutron star in an accretion disk surrounding it.
From first disruption to final draining away of the accretion disk would probably last less than a minute.

this thread blows my mind
I can't even conceive something 1,000 times stronger than steel...but TEN BILLION?
