Should I lose weight first or bodybuild?

I am 6'2" 242. My dilemma: Should I concentrate on losing weight before I start bodybuilding? I am a newbie and need some advice. Also, I plan to work out approx 3 times per week. How soon can you see results?

I would work on getting rid of that body fat first. Not saying you can't lift weights, but you'll be better off focusing on good nutrition and some cardio

    Both.

Noobs should be able to recomp (build muscle while losing fat) fairly easily.

Cardio + lifting will work synergistically.

If you're a noob, as stated above, you can do both at the same time; and, unless you plan on removing a near-unhealthy level of calories from your diet, you will probably do both just by going to the gym.

Give yourself 6 weeks to see results. Try to get a good base for your measurements with a cloth-tape (biceps, chest, gut, thigh, calf) and get a trainer at your gym to provide your bodyfat %.

Then just stick with whatever workout you've chosen, don't miss any days, and only check your progress after the 6th week.

Also: stay away from the scale, it is not an accurate assessor of your overall fitness and body composition.

Im going for cut not bulk.
But i am afraid i am going for bulk.
I am mainly focusing on my:
    shoulders (bench)
    Triceps (bench)
    Biceps (curls)
    forearms (curls)
    chest (bench)

All i am doing is Benchpress and curls..
Which is pretty ****ty compared to everyone on this site.
(I am planning on fixing up my routine soon),
although i have seen great results.

I am skinny, but i fear that I am going to get fat because I am not burning off anything.

I have gained a bigger chest, shoulders and biceps.
Fortunately i live a minute from a park, if i did see a gain in fat.. I could jog around the park at night.
