Hey layne thanks for showing your recovery. I ripped my rotatorcuff and had my bicep tendon cut and re-attached. I've been discouraged and afraid that I would never be able to get in there and do some serious lifting ever again.

Your thread gives those of us with injuries hope.

You can, and need to find a ground that you know you are suppose to stand on.. hence, stand your ground, this is the place where you know everything is as it should be for you. If you stand in a place where you know in your heart things are wrong, most things around you will never be right.

Rule number one, never work at being what another man defines as being "honorable", Honorable is is being true to what you know and and doing what you know is right for you..

    1) don't think that it CAN'T happen to you... it CAN... just being aware of it is huge.

    2) lift controlled on the negative

    3) DO NOT USE A WIDE GRIP ON ANY BARBELL EXERCISE

    4) tuck your elbows on barbell presses

    5) work on your flexibility

I was really suprised looking through some of the pics, I've only seen ones of you on stage before, looking shredded, don't take this the wrong way but in some, you just look like an average guy who goes to the gym (give or take the quads )
i thought this too at first but in the newer pics just above you look huge again

Awesome bicep peaks...very impressive comeback. I know just how hard that injury is to come back from.

Are there any lifts you are not doing yet?

    Layne,

Can I ask what you were benching at the time of your tear? I know you didn't tear it benching but just curious. And what kind of form were you using?

Also, you said you tore it doing "singles", what do you mean by that??

i was doing reverse band bench presses with 545, but it's variable resistance, at the bottom of the movement it was probably close to 400 lbs and at the top it was 545. It helps you work on lockout strength.

I was using a wide grip, typical bodybuilding arms cross style.

Good God layne you are strong for your size. I remember a long time ago seeing a video of you maxing 385 on the bench, so I was wondering where you were at these days.

I never ever go wide on bench. I always go a little past shoulder width and go nice and slow on the negatives. I have a buddy who uses typical noob form - he goes really wide, really heavy and bounces the bar off his chest while simultaneaously throwing his ass in the air for extra oomph. I'm going to refer him to this peck tear thread LOL.

You have an unnatural amount of power for your size. I'm glad to see you in powerlifting and taking advantage of the strength God gave you.

oh please everyone is weak when they start lifting. I have the strongest chest amongst my friends and I can only bench 345 x 1 on a good day. You are only 30lbs heavier than me but could probably out bench me by at least 100+lbs. I won't even get into deads or squats. You are elite at your weight for being all natural.

Just take the damn compliment LOL

In your opinion, is it safer (with regards to pec tears) to only bring down the barball until your triceps are parallel to the floor? I tore my labrum and ever since I have been doing this the pain has gone away on benching.

You're really coming back nicely. I hope this injury never happens to me, i'd literally just start crying in front of the entire gym.

The injury may have taken a huge part of your training out, but it's awesome to see the dedication you have to the sport. With an injury like that i, and probably most people, would never think of going back to the gym for a while. Diet would probably fall out of place, etc., but it looks like you just came back stronger than ever. Congrats on the DL, hope to see you compete soon again

Think this may have just saved me from a potential future injury, thanks. Just getting back into my training after a 4 year layoff and have been using compound exercises to build strength back up. Hearing stuff like this just reminds me, good control and decent form at all times can help to reduce the risk of these sorts of injurys. Wont be using wide grips ever again either. Thanks again.

    i would recommend dumbbells.

if you have to train bench, make sure you do a narrower grip and tuck your elbows while performing it
