as one post mentioned, a labral tear does not necessarily have to be implicated with detatchment of the biceps tendon. however with a slap tear by definition, at least PART of the biceps tendon will be "detatched", as its attatchment is AT the superior fascia of the glenoid labrum (i hope we all know slap = superior labral anterior to posterior.) i put detatched in quotes because like ryan said, the biceps tendon basically turns into the labrum, so it may not be detatched from the labrum per se, but rather the labrum at its insertion point will be detatched from the glenoid. the excact location and severity of the tear will play a role though in your ability to perform movements involving the biceps. like ryan, i had no post surgery implications with my biceps tendon and i was able to start curls with resistance bands at maybe six weeks. however, i have read the complete file on my surgery and have spoken not only with my doc about this extensively, but also several med students who have witnessed the procedure first hand; when tension was applied to my bicep while i was under, you can actually see a small superior edge of the labrum separate slightly from the glenoid. in any case, probably got a bit too carried away here, but seriously, ryan is right the procedure has a very high success rate and if you want to lift normally again it is really a pretty easy call if you ask me. ok ill shut up, hope that helps

    I'm 20. Very active.

Been through two surgeries on my left shoulder for dislocations. First was arthoscopic, second was open incision.

Did my pt to a T. But get this...I was doing int. rotations three years post op to maintain my shoulder strength. Light weight on a pully and my shoulder retore!

It's a small tear, so the apprehensiveness of the "shoulder popping out" feeling aint too bad, but it's enough to keep me from lifting and playing pickup hoops cuz I can't imagine a 3rd surgery at this age.

My body just seems to be failing me. I'm only a couple years outta highschool and I sure do miss my senior year shape.

Gotta be some genetics. Like I have great muscles, but poor connective tissues. So I'm literally and figuratively torn by my situation.

    Hey guys,
I had a SLAP repair done a little over a year ago. When I lift, I still have the pain in my shoulder. Is this normal? Will it ever go away?

As far as strength, I'm way ahead of where I was in the past and can bench a lil over 300. It doesn't hurt until I work out and then after the work out. I've been told the pain will never go away, but then I read other post on here that the pain goes away. Just wondering if I need to go back to my doctor to get things checked out again??? Thanks

I met my surgeon today and he says that I have a posterior labral tear and a cyst forming. He recommends surgery because the cyst might get big and cause problems.

Have any of you guys had a cyst associated with your labral tears?

I just had surgery on Dec. 11 for a slap tear and a rotator cuff tear. I personally think that the sling for the first four weeks was the worst. You have to learn how to wipe your ass all over again. I am almost to my goal of full rotation and will then start strength training it. I tell people that I would have rather torn anything else that my shoulder.

I've heard of cyst formation with meniscus tears. I am not sure what happens if you don't treat them, or the probability of them shrinking back on their own.

For those of you with SLAP tears, did the shoulder feel completely fine before surgery? I was diagnosed with a SLAP tear yet my shoulder feels completely fine, no ROM problems just a slight ache once and a while. Surgery is a big step and would like to avoid it if at all possible.

Not everyone has the convenience to get surgery. I will most likely have to put this surgery off till a future time due to work.

People who have had the surgery before and who have had the symptom of the grinding/clicking sensation - Did that go away after surgery?

I'm not sure I'd get a surgery just because a cyst might get bigger. Then again, it might not. If you don't have any increase in pain, or decrease in ROM then you should be fine. Even then, an increase in pain might be something like impingement, which is a different animal.

If you have the surgery done make sure you take the physical therapy portion of the recovery very seriously. That is where you can lose some range of motion if you don't get after it. I had surgery on my left shoulder 3 years ago for a torn labrum and the surgery has been successful so far. I still need the same surgery on my right shoulder, but I've done some significant strengthening of my shoulders to help with my problems. Sadly, I don't think I'll ever lift real heavy again as that is how I eventually tore both of my shoulders. Don't want to go through this again...........

There are many types of SLAP lesions, with most having minimal benefits of nonsurgical treatment (as mentioned cartilage has poor blood flow/healing capabilities). The SLAP lesion doesn't have to involve the biceps tendon (type 1 and 3). Surgical outcomes are usually very good but expect a fairly long recovery period to normal functioning (4-6 months). Clicking/catching sensation should be gone after the surgical treatment.

I tried to clarify some things in this thread that were inaccurate, feel free to ask other questions and I may be able to help.

ayy,i have been doing rehab on both my shoulders now for about 3 months and not seeing the results i would like to see.I am seriously considering getting surgery on both so that I will not need to worry about either of them in the future.my symptoms are grinding/clicking and at times pain or discomfort.would anyone say that it would be bad too get surgery on both shoulders at the same time?

I'm not a surgeon and that decision should ultimately be made between the surgeon and yourself. However, I would be hesitant to do both at the same time because you'd be pretty worthless and need a lot of assistance.

    Good luck man.

My pain and clicking/grinding sensation has significantly decreased. I know I will probably need the surgery but right now I just cannot go ahead with it due to work.

All I know is that I need to get back to lifting, I am going insane not being able to hit the gym. Since the pain, clicking has become minimal and I have always had full ROM, I'm gonna try to hit up the gym conservatively for the future.

This injury is the most frustrating thing to ever happen to me.

I have the same problem - I am sure you have seen me talking about this subject on the threads.

I have a torn labrum, the funny thing is that it hurt initially when I injured it. It still randomly gives me extreme pain but other times it does not hurt at all for a couple of days. I have the grinding/clicking sensation which is the absolute worst! I have full range of motion and can lift my arm above my head with no pain for the most part.

This injury happend around Thanksgiving and I have yet to go back to the gym.

My doc and phyiscal therapist want to avoid surgery. I let them know that I love to lift and I want to lift heavy and I just want to get back to my normal lifestyle. They suggested going back to my normal routine, doing PT, get back to gradual lifting and if you still have pain and what not then we can go ahead with the surgery.

For those who had the surgery, how long are you in a sling for? do you still have the grinding/clicking etc?

    Thanks for the help
Looks like you caught it early and may just need physical therapy. I on the otherhand waited about six months before seeing a doctor, had the surgery done a few weeks later. Recovery time sucks but it will not heal by itself so it had to be done. OP go to the doctor.

Good luck I had mine done just over 2 years ago, recovery time isnt all that bad for this injury. Physical therapy is pretty boring mostly streching and lots of ice. Pace yourself and make sure you dont injure it again during the healing process by going too heavy too fast youll be alright.

I too have a labral tear, but mine is very minor. Doing weights and such causes me little discomfort. I've gotten a lot of help from doing RC work, it has really helped stabilize my shoulder. Considering the human body itself can not heal a labral tear it just makes you wonder what people 50 years ago had to go through. The advent of labral surgery is relatively new.

for those that are fully healed, how long would say it was until you actually got back into the gym and pushed yourself. Not heavy weights, but just low weight high reps?
