Lisa Benson of KSHB for NBC News:
Kim Walton has been sewing and gluing in hair weaves for more than 30 years.
"I never heard of weaves saving anybody's life," Walton said. "Never in my life."
But that is exactly what Briana Bonds said happened. Bonds said she feels lucky to be alive and she has her hair weave to thank for it.
The 20-year-old Kansas City woman told police Juan Kemp, her ex-boyfriend, opened fire on her while she was inside her car at a Kansas City convenience store Wednesday night.
Bonds' back window and tail light were shot out, but it is what police found in her weave that is amazing. Detectives pulled a spent bullet from the back of Bonds' head. It had become lodged in her weave.
Walton said while the weft is the strongest part of the weave and would be the most difficult to penetrate, she finds it hard to believe a weave could stop a bullet.
"I just think it was a miracle," said Bonnie Walker, who was in Walton's shop Thursday getting her hair done. "I mean, it was just a blessing because even with the hair weave, it could have penetrated to the skull."
Bonds doesn't dismiss the idea of divine intervention. "Really, I think God was in my passenger seat," she said. "He protected me."
Bonds complained of a headache Thursday, but was otherwise unharmed.
Moral of this story: Don't bring a bald guy to a gun fight?
