    Symmetry

Just want to know how much do you worry about symmetry when training at the gym. Meaning how much do you really worry about one leg, for example, being bigger than the other? 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest.

I'm a little irritated if I'm not lifting the bar straight, or if I'm doing DB lifts and one arm lags behind...... but in terms of appearance, not much

symmetry is my one of my biggest concerns. My right bicep has more peak than my left and my right tricep is larger and more defined. On top of that it is stronger too. Same problem with my lats. Can't stand it

No offence but it's easy to be symmetrical when you have little to no muscle. Once you start packing on the mass then it becomes a challenge to be symmetrical.

How is my statement "horribly incorrect"? Generally people who are just skin and bones are fairly symmetrical and imbalances are only created once someone starts to put on muscle.

    It's VERY distracting for me.

Rather than simply concentrating on lifting the most amount of weight with great form and enjoying the workout, I'm constantly thinking about it during lifts. Is the right leg / arm under as much load as the left?

Distracting and very frustrating. Say on legs, I could add on an extra 80 pounds to the weight... but then the left leg is doing 75% of the work and afterwards feels like I have the biggest leg in the world.

    It really sucks.

I have the same problem with my lats. Its improving very well now that i am only doing isolateral exercises and performing in a 3.1.3 cadence and really contracting the lats. It takes a long time but its great! just be patient.

I def know what you mean. my rectus femoris on my left leg is bigger than my right. All you can do are isolateral exercises in the mean time. You just gotta do what you gotta do right?

thats generally the FEELING I get when I say I hate when my lifts are asymmetrical. I dont care about the results in terms of size or appearance, I just want symmetrical strength

plus I've got a very asymmetrical rib cage, which is possibly why I gave up on the idea of symmetry so long ago

Your right pec also looks larger. I am obssessed about my symmetry. I always pose in the mirror and b*tch about the little differences.

It's like talking to a 3 year old! I didn't say symmetry wasn't "attainable" (although no one is 100% symmetrical), I was merely saying earlier that someone who has packed on say 40lbs of muscle is going to find it harder to be symmetrical than someone with no muscle mass at all.
Can your small brain understand this?

Personally, I believe that symmetry is 3/4 of the battle.. I mean mass is a given, that should just be the product of bustin' your a**with heavy weights and a solid high protein diet, but to keep things balanced, that's the trick.. Symmetry will (should) follow you no matter what. If not then it's adjustment time. I mean what good is a huge upper body if ya got stick legs ?? and vice versa.. it's all about balance and making sure that things don't get too outta hand on one end or the other. I might also add that symmetry shows that you know what your doing and not favoring certain bodyparts but rather have clarity concerning the big picture, not just bits and pieces.. I'm sure we all have favorite bodyparts to train, but to keep things balanced, that's how ya do it!

my chest is very unsymetrical. The left side looks way more filled out than the right.

Symmety and balance are two different things mate. You're talking about balance in your post. ie. having a big upper body and small legs doesn't mean you're asymmetrical, but having a massive right lat and small left lat for example, means you are asymmetrical.

True... my bad.. for whatever reason my wording didn't come out quite like I wanted, but actually I thought about it and came to the conclusion that perhaps what I was get'n at was more in the lines of proportion.. To me symmetry is where you have everything balanced out on an overall spectrum.. ie.- big back, high chest, good legs, good tie-ins & arms and calves roughly the same size creating an overall of balance and symmetry.. whereas proportion could mean not being too big up top to not match the lower half & vice versa.. I should've gone beyond the first sentance in the o/p stating..

Just want to know how much do you worry about symmetry when training at the gym.
That's what caught my eye.. still, it's such a fine line for all 3 (balance, proportion & symmetry), this is what makes this lifestyle so unique, it's a neverending education.

you are right . In bodybuilding, symmetry is synonymous to proportion and balance. I just wanted to know symmetry as in left and right sides. Just wanted to clarify.

I'm a bit concerned about it because I'm pretty much a perfectionist. My left lat sticks out more than my right, and my right bicep is bigger than my left, even though I'm left handed. However, my left bicep is strong. Haha
