    how do powerlifters row?

there are a lot of different ways of barbell bent-over rowing (from the floor, hanging, back angle, hip-extention, etc)

do you barbell row? what style do you use, and what benefits do you find you get from it?

haven't barbell rowed in forever, too much lower back usually already fried from squats/deadlifts.

I normally use the Nautilus Compound Row(plate loaded). I use to do alot of BB Rows and DB Rows, but my Lower Back was always overworked and sore. By doing the compound rows it takes my lower back out of the movement and I'm still building up the upper back muscles.

Pendley Rows (back parallel to the ground) and the occasional DB Row.

I don't have the equipment at home to do cable rows and the likes.

I do a mix of dynamic rows and strict bent over rows with a slightly elevated stance (slightly lower than 45 degrees).

Stick to the basics and leave all the machine/pulleys behind (unless you are doing it for bodybuilding purposes)

I disagree, as many of us have mentioned, the lower back gets a beating from Lower workouts, and DB Rows, barbell rows, etc. are usually too much for most.Chest supported rows, and other machines are great for taking their place if needed, although maybe not as effective to some.

Well, if we are talking about isolating the lats, then yes, I concur that machine work has its place and is very effective.

However, TS asked about rows for powerlifters and I am of the opinion that machine work isn't optimal for strength (though I can only speak from my own experiences, machine work may be great for others).

If your lower back can't handle assistance lifts like BORs (because they are fatigued from powercleans, deads etc), then I think it may be counter productive to focus your efforts on lifts that don't increase lower prosterior chain power.

    1. if they are looking to get their back stronger (thoracic stability during the deadlift), they will train their back with a barbell in the appropriate rep range.

    2. if they want size for a shirted bench, they will train it for late size and thickness; likely utilizing db rows and pullups in the appropriate rep range.

    3. if they want a bigger upper back for squat, then they will shrug and row.

Don't ask me what rep ranges are appropriate. You can figure that out.

Standing and Lying T-Bar, V-Bar, ISO Hammer and High ISO Hammer and may start getting back into a variety of cable rows.

I have found that I must chose carefully on which to use because I do enough as it is that effects lower back and anything standing hits it also.

Barbell rows with different grips and angles of torso, DB rows, t-bar rows, chest supported t-bar rows, sometimes corner rows. When de-loading I may do some sort of machine row, but I do not really like them.

heavy barbell rows similar to the way you see ronnie coleman do it but using various grip widths and as well as overhand or underhand. T-bar rows, dumbell rows, cable rows, odd time i'll do chest supported rows but i tend to not do that one.
