Brief Review - Pro Rexan Powerblock Dumbbells

A few weeks ago I picked up a pair of Pro Rexan Powerblocks with plates 1-4 and the four 2 1/2 pound adder weights plus the stand for $150 off CL. They're in great shape. I already have a set of Ironmaster Dumbbells with the 120 lb add on kit, a set of hex dumbbells 5 to 50 lbs and a set of pro-style dumbbells 10 - 90 lbs. Yes. I have the addiction and spend way too much time searching Craigslist. At $150, the Powerblocks with the stand were too good to pass up and I've always wanted to give them an extended try. I figured I'd sell them for a profit if I don't want to keep them.

First, let me say I love my Ironmasters. I basically stopped using the pro dumbbells for all lifts over 55 lbs once I got the Ironmasters. What I didn't like was dropping below 55 lbs on the Ironmasters because it meant taking off all the plates, including the two 22.5 lb weights per dumbbell, and switching out the longer locking screws for the regular pair. Not bad, just a hassle. Before I found these Powerblocks, I was seriously considering buying a second set of Ironmaster handles and 20 five pounds plates. I have a relatively small workout area so I'm always looking for ways to make the most use of the space I have. My racks of fixed dumbbells take up a good amount of space.

For a few weeks now, I've been using the Powerblocks for all dumbbell lifts under 55 lbs. This set of Powerblocks weighs in at 48 lbs per dumbbell with all nested plates engaged and both adder weights in each handle. If I need 50 pounds, I just slap on the Platemates. I've been using them for dumbbell curls, seated shoulder presses and one arm triceps extensions on light bench nights. I have to say, overall, I like them and will probably keep them.

    Likes:

    1) Very quick to change.

    2) Techno strength cool (innovative design).

    3) The handle is comfortable to grasp (even though my preference is the knurled handle of the Ironmasters).

    4) Takes up far less space than my racks of dumbbells.

    Surprises:

    1) My hand no longer feels trapped inside the Powerblock cage-like handle. It took a few workouts, but I adjusted. The only thing it hinders is getting that curl-in of the wrist at the top of the alternating dumbbell curl as my wrist is physically blocked by the support bar from curling in.

    2) Fairly well balanced, even with one or both the adder weights inserted.

    3) The sound the nested weight plates make when being turned about in space is not bad (note - the Ironmasters are absolutely quiet since they interlock and are locked down tight with the locking screw).

    Dislikes:

    1) Occasional cockeyed pin placement. After changing the selector pin placement, you should check for proper selector pin alignment after you pick the dumbbells up.

    2) The pointed ends of the weight selector pins that poke out the side opposite from where they're inserted sometimes catch on my shirt when doing curls or performing movements with the dumbbell close to my hip.

    3) The add-on kits are way overpriced and used Pro Rexan add-on kits don't turn up all that often on ebay or CL (and when they do, their too freakin far away).

    4) Selector pins can be bent.

    5) You can't lose control and drop/dump these without risking damaging the dumbbells (in fact it voids the warranty).

Overall, if I had to chose only one set of adjustable dumbbells, I'd chose the Ironmasters. The Powerblocks, however, are a close second. With my current set up (i.e., Ironmasters for everything dumbbell related over 55 pounds and Powerblocks for 50 pounds and below) I can have the best of both worlds. This set up now works well enough for me that I'm selling (sold) my 2 sets of fixed dumbbells. Once I sell those, I'll have space for a GHR or reverse hyper! Let the CL hunt begin!

Your post is almost too good to be true. You were able to make your own decisions on some equipment without asking retarded questions, you recognized a good deal and capitalized on it knowing that you might not want/like them, you used the product for a period of time, you posted some links with other info and finally you posted a lucid review that will possibly help the next person that comes here for information on the powerblock. Well, that last part is doubtful as once this post gets buried no one will ever search for it again, but good looking out anyway.

Regardless, something don't smell right. I'm gonna rep you anyway....but I got my eye on you pardner.

Oh, and you need to sell some of that other stuff to free up some cash and space for the next sweet deal!

    Ironmasters or
    Powerblocks? Heated debate.
    D'oh! Combination.

    Ironmasters, or
    Powerblocks? Falls on deaf ears;
    Get a grip, just lift!

    Ironmasters, or
    Powerblocks? Cold iron choice:
    Bowflex avoidance.

    Ironmaster, or
    Powerblocks? Fragrant choices -
    Maybe a weight vest?
